Overview
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer to join Thermo Fisher Scientific's fast-paced manufacturing facility. You’ll be responsible for carrying out planned and reactive maintenance across a wide range of production machinery and equipment, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance. This is a hands-on, multi-disciplinary role requiring expertise in both electrical and mechanical engineering.
Key Responsibilities
* Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive breakdown repairs on manufacturing equipment.
* Diagnose faults and implement timely and effective solutions.
* Support installation and commissioning of new machinery or equipment upgrades.
* Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out safely and strictly in compliance with health & safety standards.
* Maintain accurate records of work carried out using the CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System).
* Work collaboratively with production teams to identify areas of improvement.
* Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support lean manufacturing practices.
* Respond quickly to breakdowns, minimising production downtime.
* Assist with spare parts management and stock control.
Key Skills & Experience Required
* Time-served engineer with an apprenticeship or relevant NVQ/City & Guilds Level 3 in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
* Proven experience in a manufacturing or industrial maintenance environment.
* Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills.
* Experience working with conveyors, motors, hydraulics, pneumatics, PLCs, and automated systems.
* Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
* Basic understanding of health & safety, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
* Flexible and proactive approach to problem-solving.
* Strong communication skills and a great teammate attitude.
Desirable (Not Essential)
* 17th/18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations.
* Experience with PLC fault finding (Siemens, Allen Bradley, etc.).
* Knowledge of lean manufacturing or continuous improvement tools (e.g., 5S, Kaizen).
Shift Pattern
* Pitman shift pattern 24/7 days and nights rotation
Environmental Conditions
* Able to lift 40 lbs. without assistance
* Adherence to all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Safety Standards
* Cleanroom: no hair products, jewelry, makeup, nail polish, perfume, exposed piercings, facial hair etc. allowed
* Cold Room/Freezers -22 degrees F / -6 degrees C
* Fluctuating temperatures hot/cold
* Laboratory setting
* Loud noises (equipment/machinery)
* No contact lens allowed; prescriptive glasses will be provided
* Office
* Rapid flashing lights
* Some degree of PPE (safety glasses, gowning, gloves, lab coat, ear plugs etc.)
* Standing for full shift
* Strong odors (chemical, lubricants, biological products etc.)
* Various outside weather conditions
* Warehouse
