Overview

Beaminster School is seeking to appoint a dynamic, highly motivated and inspirational Head of English to join us in September 2026. We are currently oversubscribed in several year groups and are 3rd in Dorset for results, set in beautiful open countryside on the edge of Beaminster, a Dorset town with great charm and historic interest, just 6 miles from the World Heritage Jurassic Coast.

Responsibilities

* Lead the English department and contribute to school-wide improvement through high-quality teaching and learning.
* Ensure outstanding outcomes at GCSE and A Level and support cross-school collaboration, including a joint Sixth Form with the Sir John Colfox Academy.
* Lead and develop an engaging, broad English curriculum and oversee department events and opportunities for students and the wider community.
* Set high expectations for students and staff, and promote an inclusive, safeguarding-focused environment.
* Lead on literacy and language development across the school as part of a whole-school approach.
* Collaborate with colleagues to implement fresh approaches to engage learners and improve learning outcomes.
* Promote life-long learning and continuing professional development for staff and students.
* Foster a positive school ethos aligned with our values of Ambition, Service and Kindness.
* Support and lead extra-curricular activities beyond subject responsibilities.
* Be a positive role model and manage time effectively while balancing teaching, department duties and school development projects.
* Maintain high standards of punctuality and meet deadlines consistently.
* Support the safeguarding of children and young people in line with school policies.


Qualifications and Skills

* A Degree + PGCE (or equivalent qualification)
* QTS status
* Evidence of excellent teaching ability
* Evidence of being an inspirational teacher with a pro-active and energetic approach
* Evidence of the ability to raise achievement through good use of data to analyse performance, review patterns and take appropriate action
* Evidence of excellent communication skills with students, staff and parents
* Evidence of a commitment to Inclusion and Safeguarding
* Evidence of the ability to reflect upon classroom practice and pedagogy to improve outcomes for all
* Evidence of continuing professional development or study
* Ability to teach A Level English
* Highly competent and comfortable with the use of technology and IT, including as a teaching tool, and willing to be trained further as required
* An interest in, and willingness to lead extra-curricular activities (not limited to subject specific areas)
* A positive role model with high expectations of students and self
* A willingness and enthusiasm to trial new approaches to engage learners and promote better learning
* Creative thinker who is passionate about your subject
* A commitment to life-long learning
* A successful team player who enjoys working collaboratively
* Able to deal positively with people from a broad cross-section of backgrounds and at all levels, both internally and externally
* Punctuality and a proven ability to meet deadlines
* A willingness to implement the Christian ethos and values of the school
* A real interest in and ability to take a whole-school view

* We have a joint Sixth Form with our partner school, the Sir John Colfox Academy in Bridport, providing a broad and developing range of courses including A Level English Language, Literature and Film Studies. Sixth Form numbers are buoyant and we offer a unique experience for our students to learn and grow, with the best from two schools!
