Followingthe successful completion of a psychosocial care project for the WestYorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance in 2024-25, we are delighted toadvertise a new part-time Project Manager post (0.6 WTE) funded by the WestYorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance (WY&H CA) and hosted by LeedsTeaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT). The purpose of this post is to continuethe improvement work on psychologically informed care for people affected bycancer in the region through providing project management. Excellent links have been established andthe key priorities are ready to be taken forwards. The post-holder will work across the CancerAlliance which brings together six acute Trusts. This post is advertised alongside aConsultant Clinical Psychologist post (0.2 WTE) who will be responsible forleading the project and providing clinical expertise. The successfulapplicant must be able to start soon after the recruitment process.


Main duties of the job

Theprevious project identified three workstreams for the next phase:

Improving equitable access tospecialist cancer psychology

Improving universal psychosocialsupport

Thispost will work in collaboration with Consultant Clinical Psychologists and aSenior Project Manager at the Cancer Alliance to achieve the project aims.The key priorities for the project will include:

Utilising links with keycollaborators who might be service users, commissioners, clinical leads inprimary care (cancer and mental health), Talking Therapies, CMHT, hospices orpsycho-oncology services across the region

Compiling information on projectwork and collating useful models from elsewhere

Developing a high-qualitypatient-centred pathway and service specification. These will encompasspatient experience, quality & safety, efficiency and effectiveness,commissioning perspectives and take account of existing contextualopportunities and constraints.


About us

Thepost is hosted within the LTHT Cancer Psychology Service and Haematologyteam, but will have strong links with the Cancer Psychology services in theother trusts within the WY&H CA. The Cancer Psychology clinicians fromthe acute trusts across the Cancer Alliance meet every quarter and thepost-holder will be expected to report progress on the project to this group,as well as seek advice from the members. The post-holder will work closelywith the WY&H CA Psychosocial Project Manager and will also link with theWY&H CA Living Well and Beyond Cancer programme manager.

Job responsibilities

JOBPURPOSE

Toproject manage a project to improve psychosocial support pathways across theWest Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance. This will involve working withcancer psychology services in acute trusts, NHS Talking Therapies, communitymental health teams and voluntary sector organisations.

3. JOB DIMENSIONS

Thisfixed term project is funded by the West Yorkshire and Harrogate CancerAlliance. Until the end of March 2026, the aim is to build on work from aprevious project looking at improving psychosocial care for people withcancer in the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance. This projectidentified three workstreams for the next phase:

Improving equitable access tospecialist cancer psychology

Improving universal psychosocialsupport

Thisnewly created post will be expected to work in collaboration with ConsultantClinical Psychologists and a Senior Project Manager at the Cancer Alliance toachieve the project aims. The work will be across the West Yorkshire andHarrogate Cancer Alliance as required where cancer pathways / proposed newmodels of working crosses organisations. This may include working withcommunity-based services and organisations providing clinical and / orsupportive care. The Project Manager will be expected to work under their owninitiative, developing links and establishing relationships as required todeliver outcomes.

Theproject manager will be mostly working from home* (with equipment from LTHT)but the post may require occasional travel.

KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Thecore knowledge, skills and experience required in the post are set out indetail in the person specification. They can be summarised as:

Degree, preferably in a healthservices or health related field

ECDL or be able to demonstrateequivalent IT competencies.

Knowledge of how to influencepatient care and clinical pathways

Project management experienceincluding skills in leading and managing new and complex project development,strategy development and clinical pathway development.

Skilled in managing all requiredaspects of project development at any one time.

Experience of evaluating theprogress and impact of projects and of taking responsibility for makingrecommendations to senior healthcare personnel regarding future servicedirection / development.

Experience in data evaluationmethods and experience in analysing and presenting complex data in a clearand informative way.

Experience in compiling andeffectively communicating findings of complex reports / data to seniorhealthcare personnel in group settings / meetings.

Experience in leading practice orservice improvement.

Experience of how to influencepatient care and clinical pathways.

Able to communicate the benefits ofnew clinical pathways to service planners and providers and achieveengagement.

Good knowledge of NHS commissioningpractice and funding streams

Excellent communication skills,both verbal and written.

Experience and confidence inapproaching and influencing clinicians, healthcare and supportive caremanagers preferably in both primary and secondary care settings and be ableto manage a range of opinions in an objective, unbiased and focused way.

An ability to work independentlywithin a strategic framework.

Experience in and a proven abilityto develop and write successful business cases to secure funding

Experience of facilitating largemeetings and educational events with the aim of fostering stakeholderengagement and strategic agreement of future direction / required servicedevelopments.

Health services relatedprofessional qualification

Management qualifications would bean advantage

Trained in use of serviceimprovement methodologies

Working knowledge of cancer ormental health clinical pathways

Previous experience in healthcarecommissioning.

Experience in budget management.

8. CORE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Thepost holder must be experienced in project management and this should includeexperience in leading new project development. Sound knowledge of how todevelop, maintain and implement clinical pathways is desirable. The postholder must be IT literate and be competent in working with Word, PowerPoint,Excel packages, Internet and email management.

Thepost holder must have experience and confidence in approaching andinfluencing clinicians, healthcare and supportive care managers, preferablyin both primary and secondary care settings and be able to manage a range ofopinions in an objective, unbiased and focussed way. They must have a goodunderstanding of the changes currently underway in clinical commissioning andan understanding of the difficulties in identifying key individuals in thecurrent climate. They must be able to communicate the benefits of newclinical pathways to service planners and providers and achieve engagement.

Goodskills in healthcare user communication are essential as the project managerwill have a responsibility to ensure patient involvement in proposed servicere-modelling / development.

Thepost holder must be able to define useful data and co-ordinate itscollection, which may be across a number of different organisations/specialties/ services. They must be able to interpret data in such a way asto demonstrate outcomes and make recommendations.

Excellentskills in developing short and long term targets and strategies fororganisations is necessary. In the short term, the testing of new clinicaldiagnostic pathway models is required which consider new ways of working andinvolvement from clinical teams and primary care and community settings. Inthe long term, proposed models need to be sustainable. This requiresdeveloping frameworks for measuring success and working with the clinicalteams to develop business cases for funding. The post holder must haveexperience in measuring outcomes of previous projects which benefithealthcare service provision and development.
