Roles Available in Location: Montrose, Ware, Worthing

Education required: To apply for this placement, you must be:

Currently studying an Undergraduate Degree in Analytical Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Pharmacology, Life Sciences

Please read the degree requirements for each role carefully before applying.

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

If you have already graduated with a bachelor’s degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Expected Start date: July 2026

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

Salary: A salary of £25,400 plus a bonus.

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

The Roles (5 available)

Role 1 – Analytical Chemistry – Montrose

Degree requirements: Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

There is an opportunity at the Montrose site to join our Analytical Chemistry function within the Montrose Site MSAT group. The Manufacturing Science and Technology function (MSAT) group technical investigations and supports site manufacturing covering process chemistry, process engineering, organic chemistry and analytical sciences.

The role would suit an individual with a real passion for analytical science & instrumental analysis and key activities include bringing new processes to the site and the ongoing improvement of existing and established analytical methods already used at Montrose.

Key Placement Learnings

16. Build spectroscopic (IR/NMR/MS), chromatographic (HPLC/GC) and materials science (SEM/XRPD) analysis skills

17. Carrying out instrumental analysis to support the site's new process introductions and existing process improvement initiatives.

18. Resolve analytical issues that are disrupting the efficient operation of the operating units.

19. Spectroscopic characterisation of novel and unknown entities.

20. Gain an appreciation of the role of analytical science to the running of a pharmaceutical site including method validation & GMP.

Role 2: Synthetic Organic Chemistry – Montrose

Degree requirements: Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry

Working Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

There is an opportunity at the Montrose site to join Synthetic Organic Chemistry function within the Montrose Site MSAT group. The Manufacturing Science and Technology group (MSAT) conducts technical investigations and supports site manufacturing covering process chemistry, process engineering, organic chemistry and analytical sciences.

The role would suit an individual with a real passion for practical synthetic organic chemistry and key activities would include bringing new processes to the site and the ongoing improvement of existing and established chemical processes already located at Montrose.

Key Placement Learnings

21. Carrying out organic synthesis experiments to support the site's new process introductions and existing process improvement initiatives.

22. Resolve organic chemistry issues that are disrupting the efficient operation of the operating units.

23. Isolating, characterising and synthesising novel impurities and chemical entities.

24. Develop strong practical laboratory organic synthesis using a range of classical and automated synthetic organic chemistry equipment.

25. Building spectroscopic characterisation skills.

Role 3: Materials Science – Ware

Degree requirements: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmacy or related

Workplace Arrangements - Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

Materials Science is a division within Global Supply Chain Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT). We support products globally, both for GSK sites and externally. Whilst we work predominantly on small molecule medicines through lifecycle (both New Product Introduction – NPI, and established products), we also do some work on large molecule and vaccines products. We are a characterisation-focused team, getting involved with business-critical troubleshooting and investigations, proactive risk assessment for material changes e.g. API changes, as well as NPI milestones, and analytical method development, transfer and troubleshooting.

Key Placement Learnings

26. Leading and supporting characterisation-focused projects, including measurement, interpretation, reporting, and presentation of data across a range of physical property characterisation techniques for stakeholders across the business

27. Ensuring adherence to Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)

28. May be responsible for the procurement, qualification, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment

29. Accountability of key lab safety and compliance tasks, such as waste management, airflow and balance checks

30. Supporting key safety metrics and participating in departmental audits to maintain safety and operational standards

31. Leading and supporting Continuous Improvement (CI) activities, including sustainability-related tasks as part of initiatives to maintain a 'Green Lab' environment

Role 4 – Analytical Chemistry – Ware

Degree requirements: Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry

Working Arrangements: Full time onsite required

Overview of the Department

A placement within the manufacturing laboratories at the Ware site involves analytical testing for GSK products (in-process and finished products) within the Oral Solid Dose and Respiratory value streams. Testing is performed on batches in preparation for them to go to the market, but also on Stability batches (these are already on the market) therefore the team is integral in supporting the supply chains. The team focuses on new product introduction, method validation, analytical method transfers, and continuous improvement projects to support with the improvement of lab processes. Alongside the analytical testing there is opportunity to be trained on other activities to ensure the laboratory works compliantly e.g. documentation updates, equipment checks.

Role 5 – Analytical Chemistry – Worthing

Degree requirements: Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry or similar

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

Our department provides analytical resources for our colleagues on site which specialised on fermentation processes of enzymes, bacteria, and plant cell cultures. Some of the projects on site involve increase productivity and extraction efficiency of precursors and APIs on marketed products and comparability studies. We also provide support for several GSK sites around the world on biopharmaceutical supply chain improvements and investigations for manufacturing deviations. We specialised on chromatography analysis (LCMS, GCMS, HR-LCMS, IC, LCUV)

Key Placement Learnings

37. Deliver planned testing aligned to team priorities across a range of techniques including HPLC/UPLC, LC-MS, UV-Vis, GC, KF etc.

38. Compile, analyse and communicate experimental results including in written reports and presentations.

39. Escalate problems and contribute to troubleshooting.

40. Contribute to method development and experimental design aligned to project or department goals.

41. Adhere to and help maintain the highest levels of Safety, GLP, sustainable lab practices and housekeeping across the department.
