Electronics & Embedded Design Engineer (R&D, PCB, FPGA)
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Northern Power Electronics (NPE) is a specialist industrial electronics company focused on repair, refurbishment and R&D for complex electronic systems. We are looking for an experienced Electronics & Embedded Design Engineer to help us design, prototype and improve electronic solutions for industrial and embedded applications.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys working at the bench, designing PCBs, writing embedded code, and understanding how real hardware behaves in the field.
What you will be doing
* Designing and developing embedded electronic hardware for industrial and control applications
* Schematic capture and PCB layout for small to medium complexity boards (digital, mixed-signal, power interface)
* Developing and debugging embedded firmware (e.g. C/C++ on ARM / microcontrollers)
* Contributing to FPGA-based designs (VHDL/Verilog) for dedicated logic, interfaces or signal processing
* Selecting and evaluating electronic components, reading datasheets and proposing suitable alternatives
* Building and testing prototypes: soldering, rework, test jigs, basic documentation
* Using lab equipment (oscilloscope, DMM, PSU, logic probes etc.) for bring-up and fault-finding
* Working with the wider team on R&D projects, from concept through to tested hardware in the field
What we’re looking for
* Proven experience in electronics / embedded design (not a first job); ideally 2+ years in a similar role
* Strong understanding of electronic components (passives, semiconductors, power stages, interfaces) and how they behave in real circuits
* Solid skills in:
* Schematic & PCB design (KiCad, Altium or similar)
* Embedded C/C++ on microcontrollers (e.g. STM32, PIC, AVR, ESP32 etc.)
* Basic FPGA / CPLD development (VHDL or Verilog)
* Comfortable using standard lab tools for debugging, measurement and fault-finding
* Ability to read and interpret datasheets, application notes and reference designs
* Good problem-solving mindset and willingness to work across both design and practical build/test
Right to Work & Residency
We cannot provide visa sponsorship for this role. To apply, you must already have the legal right to work in the UK (e.g. UK citizen, Settled / Pre-Settled Status, ILR, or other visa that does not require employer sponsorship), and you must be currently resident in the UK. Applications from candidates who require current or future visa sponsorship (including Skilled Worker sponsorship) unfortunately cannot be considered.
What we offer
* The chance to work on varied, niche and technically interesting electronic systems
* Close collaboration with experienced engineers on real industrial hardware, not just simulations
* Opportunity to grow into more advanced R&D, design and project ownership
* A small, agile environment where your ideas actually get used
How to apply
Please send your CV and a short note highlighting:
* 1–2 projects where you designed PCBs and embedded firmware
* Any experience you have with FPGA / CPLD
* Confirmation of your right to work in the UK without sponsorship
* to: npeservice1@gmail.com or apply via LinkedIn.
