The impressive 1740's Georgian house, only 10 minutes from Derby, surrounded by beautiful gardens, orchard & beehives, has been renovated over the last 10 years to a busy state of the art scientific laboratory. Five roles available! We are looking for five laboratory technicians with excellent attention to detail to join us for a 4 month fixed term contract for our seasonal peak with a possibility of contract extension or permanent position. Job Purpose: To play a vital role in the analysis of environmental samples for the presence of environmental DNA (eDNA), applying molecular biology techniques to generate accurate, high-quality data. Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities: Carry out centrifugation of environmental samples following strict procedures. This involves operating multiple centrifuges and performing precise pipetting. This is a critical stage of the analytical workflow requiring continuous operation and attention to detail. Carry out DNA extraction from environmental samples in accordance with procedures ensuring careful handling, traceability, and timely progression of samples through the laboratory. Maintain laboratory work areas, equipment, and storage spaces to a high standard of tidiness, cleanliness, and readiness for use. Adhere to all Health & Safety policies, including COSHH and laboratory safety procedures, ensuring a safe and compliant working environment at all times. Maintain high standards of quality, organisation and accuracy across all laboratory activities, in line with internal quality systems and regulatory requirements. Monitor stock levels of consumables and reagents, maintaining accurate records and reporting shortages or issues to the supervisor in a timely manner. Provide flexible support to other areas of the business during periods of increased demand, including administrative tasks. Qualifications, skills, and experience: Science-based degree such ecology, zoology, biomed or similar (essential) Previous pipetting experience (essential) DNA extraction/PCR experience (desirable) Interest in molecular biology, molecular ecology or eDNA (desirable) A methodical approach to tasks Well organised A good attention to detail Fast work pace A proactive nature; there is always something to be done to help the team Self-motivated A need to get it right A positive can-do-it attitude The position is a zero hour contract with expected and timetabled hours of 32 hours per week. Working a rotating shift pattern, across 7 days a week, alternating between mornings and evenings during peak analysis periods.
