This role will involve both line management and project management responsibilities, working in accordance with Science Museum Group policies and protocols. You will collaborate with colleagues across Collection Services, Estates, and Operations, playing a key role in developing and delivering a proactive preventive conservation programme that provides consistent and focused preventive care for SMG collections.
As a Senior Preventive Conservator, you will undertake a diverse range of activities, including collecting and reporting environmental data, contributing to policy development, and providing training on preventive conservation, hazard identification, and management.
We're seeking an experienced conservation professional with strong preventive conservation skills and the confidence to make informed decisions regarding collection hazards. You should hold a relevant conservation qualification or equivalent practical experience, with expertise in environmental monitoring, Integrated Pest Management, and advising on collection storage and transport. Familiarity with hazards such as asbestos, radiation, or other risks is essential, along with the ability to determine when to act independently or seek assistance, ensuring safety for both people and collections.
Knowledge of UK Health and Safety practices, including contractor management, risk assessment, and hazard management, is required. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are crucial. Proficiency with MS Office and collections management databases is essential, while experience with staff management, MIMSY, advanced environmental monitoring, or remedial conservation of 3D composite objects would be advantageous.
