Consultant Obstetrician- Maternal Medicine and Fetal Care

Somerset NHS foundation Trust is seeking a passionate and forward thinking Consultant Obstetrician to join our expanding team at Musgrove Park Hospital. This new post has been created to strengthen our high risk obstetric service and support the development of a dedicated elective caesarean section team.

This is a full time (10 PA) permanent position with a 8.5.1.5 DCC/SPA split with a requirement to participate in the obstetric only on call rota (1:12)

The successful candidate will have a special interest in high risk obstetrics and foetal surveillance, with the skills to perform grown scans and doppler assessments for small for gestational age babies. They will also provide cross site leadership as the Obstetric Fetal monitoring lead supporting training, compliance and quality improvement across Musgrove Park and Yeovil District Hospitals.

This is an obstetrics only role with no gynaecology commitments, offering the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative and inclusive team delivering near tertiary level care in a district general hospital set

Main duties of the job

Provide high-quality obstetric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings.

Lead foetal monitoring across both hospital sites, supporting training, compliance and service development.

Perform foetal growth scans and Doppler assessments for SGA and growth restricted babies.

Run a weekly scan clinic and a fortnightly high risk antenatal clinic, such as pre-term birth, gestational diabetes, maternal medicine or epilepsy.

Cover elective caesarean section lists and triage sessions.

Participate in the obstetric only on call rota (1:12) including twice daily consultant led ward rounds.

Supervise and support junior doctors contributing to teaching and appraisal.

Engage in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement initiatives.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to research and service innovation.

Consultants are required to supervise the education of doctors in training, and doctors in post graduate roles.

Consultants are also required to participate in audit, be accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence, they must take responsibility for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients. Consultants are also expected to take part in annual appraisals and research is encouraged.

Job responsibilities

Be part of a highly experienced and supportive team of consultants delivering comprehensive obstetric and gynaecological care.

Work in a department offering a wide range of specialist services including urogynaecology, early pregnancy, maternal medicine, foetal surveillance, diabetes and endocrinology, perinatal mental health, and chronic pelvic pain.

Contribute to a forward-looking department using innovative models and enhanced recovery principles to successfully transition to a day case pathway for the majority of elective surgical patients.

Benefit from modern facilities including a newly opened state-of-the-art surgical suite, redesigned delivery suite, stand-alone day case surgical centre, and a level 2 neonatal intensive care unit. Join a passionate team designing and building a bespoke EPAC and GAU with facilities for a truly one-stop emergency gynaecology service and ambulatory early pregnancy and hyperemesis care.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across obstetrics, gynaecology, oncology, and surgical specialties.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
* Specialist registration (or within 6 months of applying)
* MBBS or equivalent Medical Degree
* Relevant CCT in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (or within 6 months of applying)
* MSc or equivalent higher qualification
* SITIM or equivalent in maternal medicine or high risk foetal care
* Higher qualification in medical education


Experience

* Depth and breadth of clinical experience in Obstetrics
* Experience in a special interest that will complement those existing in the department.
* Experience in labour ward leadership or advanced labour ward practice


Additional Criteria

* Experience in high risk obstetrics and managing pregnancies with pre-existing medical conditions
* Competence in foetel growth scanning and Doppler assessments
* Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate.
