Overview
STRABAG UK is looking for an experienced Senior Design Manager to lead the design delivery of major industrial & logistics developments across the UK, based in St. Albans and Hertfordshire.
Responsibilities
* Take ownership and accountability for the technical requirements of the project solutions through the project life cycle.
* Develop and maintain general processes for delivery, review, assurance, progress measurement and document control.
* Create, maintain and update the Design Deliverables Register, Design Assurance Documents and the monthly Design Progress Tracker.
* Report on KPIs, identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency.
* Provide training and support to the design team, ensuring consistent approach and high professionalism.
* Manage interface with external or in-house design teams on behalf of the Project Manager.
* Represent the design department at internal and external meetings and act as the focal point of contact when the Design Engineer is absent.
* Liaise with other departments and project teams regarding design requirements.
* Undertake site visits when appropriate.
* Allocate design tasks to team members while maintaining overall performance responsibility.
* Assume responsibilities of project design engineer if appointed.
* Ensure design work follows company procedures, professional standards and current legislation.
* Prepare conceptual and detailed designs, including calculations, risk assessments, sketches and working drawings.
* Review and evaluate design work of other staff members and external designers.
* Summarise quantities for pricing and maintain records of time spent on chargeable work.
* Prepare tender‑stage designs and manage risk throughout all work stages.
* General design delivery oversight within the Build subdivision.
Qualifications
* Degree qualified in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related discipline.
* Proven experience as a Senior Design Manager or Design Manager in main contracting or major construction delivery.
* Strong background delivering industrial, logistics, warehousing or large steel‑frame construction projects.
* Experience managing multidisciplinary design teams on complex live projects.
* Strong knowledge of UK Building Regulations, planning processes and statutory compliance.
* Experience working through pre‑construction and delivery phases.
* Member of CIOB/ICE desirable.
* CSCS card.
