Trainee Clinical Coder

Permanent | Full-time | Hybrid (following on-site training period) Interviews 22nd September

We're offering an exciting opportunity to begin your career in clinical coding with full training and support provided. Join our small and dedicated team who are passionate about delivering high-quality patient data that is used for statistical analysis, epidemiology, service delivery decisions and payment for NHS organisations.

As a Trainee Clinical Coder, you'll learn how to interpret clinical information from patient records and translate it into standardised alphanumeric codes. You'll receive structured training to help you develop the skills needed to work efficiently with sensitive healthcare information.

You will have:

GCSEs (A-C / Level 4+) in English, Maths and Science

Previous administrative experience

A basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology

Focus on detail and accuracy


Main duties of the job

Reporting into the Team Manager, your responsibilities will include:

Analyse electronic and handwritten patient records to extract relevant clinical information

Assign codes using clinical coding software and the Patient Administration System (PAS)

Ensure codes are submitted promptly to meet local and national financial deadlines

Work with clinical and admin teams to gather missing information or clarify details

Identify and report data quality issues to maintain accurate patient records

Undertake background research to support accurate coding decisions

Please note that Sheffield Children's uplift pay to meet the Real Living Wage, which is £12.60 per hour.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* A-C/Level 4 and above English, Maths and Science
* Evidence of recent Continuous Professional Development
* Medical terminology qualification
* A Level in Science


Experience

* Working in an office environment


Knowledge

* Basic knowledge of medical terminology
* Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology
* Methodical working procedures
* Computer literacy with accurate keyboard skills
* Excellent concentration skills and attention to detail
* Effective organisational skills
* Team player
* Able to work with staff at all levels
* Demonstrate initiative
* Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
* Ability to concentrate fully in a learning environment
* Working knowledge of a Patient Administration System
* Working knowledge of hospital administrative processes and practices
