Areyou a Nurse and are looking for a new challenge, then the exciting andever-growing speciality of Interventional Radiology may be just for you? Thistraining role will suit you whether you have previous experience in theatreor just starting out in your career and interested in a fast-paceddepartment. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individualto join our team. The team is looking for candidates who are committed topatient centred and evidence-based care of the highest standard, to workwithin the interventional radiology department here at Leeds TeachingHospitals NHS Trust. You will rotate around 3 sites (LGI, SJUH and BexleyWing) and enhance your knowledge of radiology-based procedures as aninterventional radiology nurse. This involves the care of the consciouspatients undergoing elective and acute, diagnostic and sometimes complexmulti-organ vascular procedures such as embolisation of tumours/haemorrhage,angioplasty, stenting, nephrostomy insertion, tumour ablations, and acuteurological and vascular procedures and stroke thrombectomy. This post isbeing advertised as B6 annex 21. It is aimed but not exclusive to candidatescurrently working at Band 5 who are ready to develop specialist nursingskills associated with interventional radiology theatres and looking for aprogressive role to a band 6 position. All candidates will be consideredbased on their experience, knowledge and skills.


Main duties of the job

Thistraining role offers an excellent opportunity to develop key skills,especially in scrubbing to assist with theatre procedures. You'll beinvolved in perioperative patient care, including administering IV

medicationand post-operative care such as sheath removal. The role requires closecollaboration with a multidisciplinary team, including consultants,radiographers, and other healthcare professionals. A new radiologydevelopment pathway is available to support your growth, helping you gain thecompetencies needed for the Band 6 Specialist Peri-Operative Practitionerrole, with training lasting up to 24 months. As you progress, youll be ableto work on call across both sites. This role is ideal for those pursuing acareer in radiology theatres, offering the chance to gain essentialcompetencies under the guidance of experienced colleagues. You'll buildspecialist knowledge, preparing you for a Senior Peri-Operative Practitionerrole. You'll deliver high-quality patient care while ensuring efficient useof resources. After completing the training, you will lead a sub-specialtywithin Interventional Radiology, such as neurology, tissue viability, orinfection control. You'll work with the multidisciplinary team to improvepatient care, theatre performance, and quality, while also contributing tothe evaluation of pre- and post-operative care. Regular updates with thesenior nursing team are also included in the role.

Job responsibilities

1.JOBPURPOSE/SUMMARY

Asan experienced practitioner the jobholder will co-ordinate activities withinthe peri-operative environment ensuring effective communication is maintainedat all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified staff within thedepartment. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient careneeds and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes ofcare.

Thejobholder will play an essential role assisting deputy/team leader in leadingand teaching the peri-operative teams throughout the 24 hour period.

Thejobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-basedpractice, developing the peri-operative team and ensuring effectivemanagement of the department in the absence of the deputy/team Leaders.

Maintainand promote a clean, secure and safe working environment

Supportthe Team Leader in setting and monitoring standards and seek to continuouslyimprove standards and the quality of patient care, including those standardsdefined in the National Benchmarks for Essential Care

Provideassessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of peri-operative carefor patients, ensuring written records are kept

Actsin accordance with the professional code of conduct

Inconjunction with the Team Leader ensure management of clinical services andefficient deployment of staff according to service needs.

Participatein the theatre on call rota, as required.

Actin such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children andvulnerable adults at all times. Is familiar with and adheres to, the LTHTsafeguarding policies.

Raiseconcerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrong doing byfollowing the LTHT Whistleblowing policy and supporting processes.

Undertakeduties on other wards or departments as and when required by service demandsor patient need.

8.SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

i)PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Frequent;standing, sitting, walking, kneeling and crouching to attend to patient needsand roles and responsibilities. Moving & Handling of patients (10-120kg(with lifting aids)) and equipment (weight 1-20kg) on a daily basis. Manualdexterity required to be able to manipulate equipment eg preparation andadministration of injections, venepuncture, cannulation, application ofdressings, insertion and removal of catheters. Requirement to wear lead gownswhen working within the interventional radiology theatres.

ii)MENTAL EFFORT:

Frequentand prolonged mental effort is required for example; to perform independentassessment and diagnosis ensuring accuracy, making decisions regardingpatients discharge home, writing detailed clinical notes and planning furthermanagement actions and calculating drug doses. Dealing with complex andchanging care needs of patients within an acute hospital environment(includes communication with relatives/carers). iii) EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Thepost deals with undiagnosed complaints; at times this can be challenging,stressful and unpredictable. The attention to detail and the ability to dealwith patients and their relatives will require emotional stability andbalance at all times.

Unpredictableworkload requires the Perioperative Practitioner to be able to rapidlyprioritise their workload at all times. Exposure to difficult situations,including distressed patients and relatives/carers. Dealing with, staffingissues and performance issues. iv) WORKING CONDITIONS: Temperature should becontrolled, but may experience hot or cold work environment.

Experience

* Significant post registration Peri-operative or equivalent experience at Advanced within relevant specialty.
* Insight into clinical speciality
* Standards of professional practice
* Broad based experience
* Experience of surgical specialty.


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse
* Recognised teaching/assessing qualification or demonstrable teaching /assessing evidence
* Relevant documented evidence of role competencies detailed within the SPOP development plan (Please see addendum) Alternatively, under Annex 21 working towards (up to a maximum of 2 years)


Other Criteria

* Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary), including clearance on blood borne viruses in compliance with Trust Policy.
