Overview
This appointment is for a Consultant Dermatologist to join the dermatology team at County Durham and Darlington. The post is full time; part-time applicants will be considered. We welcome a sub-specialist interest in skin cancer, surgery, vulval dermatoses or patch testing. Nominal Base to be arranged.
Organisation and service
The Dermatology service is a trust-wide service with medical and surgical components. The secondary care service delivers a range of Consultant- and nurse-led services from University Hospital of North Durham (UHND), Darlington Memorial Hospital, Bishop Auckland General Hospital and Sunderland Royal Hospital. General Dermatology and Specialist Nurse Clinics are run from all sites; specialist clinics and nurse-run procedure clinics are run from UHND only. Urgent Suspected Cancer clinics are based at UHND, with Consultant-triaged cases seen by Dermatology and Plastic Surgery in one clinical setting with photographers and operators on standby from both specialties to enable seamless daily surgery.
Role and responsibilities
The post-holder will be expected to provide a comprehensive dermatology clinical service, with emphasis on skin cancer and surgery provision, teledermatology sessions and acute on‑call services. This includes outpatient consultations and specialist activities as agreed with other members of the department. The consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the department. Clinic bookings will be in line with British Association of Dermatologists guidelines. Treatment of patients may be arranged in the inpatient or outpatient unit, and the consultant will be responsible for supervising this treatment.
Clinical commitment and location
The clinical commitment of the post is to provide dermatological services predominantly in Durham but also from other sites as part of the hub-and-spoke model alongside Consultant colleagues and supported by our junior staff.
Requirements and eligibility
The post-holder must hold the qualifications and certificates stated as essential in the person specification to complete pre-employment checks. From 9 April 2025 – Healthcare assistants: a minimum of two years of NHS experience within the Trust is required to consider sponsorship (sponsorship considered only if criteria are met and visa expiring within 3 months).

We provide hospital services from multiple sites including Darlington Memorial Hospital, UHND and a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland, with care also provided from community hospitals and in patients’ homes.
