The Opportunity
In this pivotal role, you will establish, manage and evolve our Data, AI and Automation strategy — ensuring we have the platforms, processes and governance needed to unlock value across every division. You’ll champion a centralised, high‑quality approach to data and intelligent automation, promote the capabilities of our Centre of Excellence, and guide the development of advanced analytics, machine learning and automation solutions.
You’ll lead a talented team, shape operating models, and work closely with senior stakeholders to ensure our data foundations are trusted, secure and future‑ready.
What You’ll Do
* Develop and deliver Data, AI and Automation solutions that support Smiths’ strategic goals.
* Oversee the design, testing, deployment and maintenance of intelligent systems.
* Collaborate with data scientists, engineers and divisional teams to integrate AI into broader architectures.
* Stay ahead of emerging AI trends and recommend improvements to tools, workflows and platforms.
* Build a roadmap that embeds strong data governance, quality management, cataloguing, traceability and master/reference data standards.
* Lead the development and management of data platforms, tooling, access controls and security best practice.
* Provide thought leadership across data architecture, governance and integration.
* Ensure all solutions meet performance, reliability and response‑time expectations.
* Drive the creation of dashboards, forms and tools that make data accessible to non‑technical users.
* Maintain and evolve data management policies, ensuring they remain effective and compliant.
* Partner with divisions to resolve data issues, define new requirements and support project scoping.
* Support the creation of analytic models and visualisations within Azure (e.g., Power BI).
* Monitor system performance and identify opportunities for enhancement.
* Lead and mentor the Data & Analytics team, managing workloads, supporting development and fostering a high‑performance culture.
What You Bring
* Degree‑level education or equivalent experience.
* Strong experience in machine learning, deep learning, NLP or computer vision.
* Proficiency in Python, Java or R, with hands‑on experience using frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
* Deep understanding of data security, governance, management and administration.
* Experience working with Azure Data Lake, Databricks and modern data architectures.
* Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret and manage large datasets.
* Experience with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, OBIEE or QlikView.
* Solid SQL skills and familiarity with ETL, data mining, data quality and big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
* Experience working with both onshore and offshore delivery models.
* Understanding of PaaS concepts, ideally within Microsoft Azure.
* ERP experience is beneficial but not essential.
