Main duties of the job

The alcohol care team (ACT) is a comprehensive 7-day service funded as the region’s early implementer site, part of the NHS long term plan.

The successful candidate will work as a clinical nurse specialist within the alcohol care team across key areas of the hospital including hepatology, gastroenterology, & acute medical unit (AMU).

Encouraging patients to engage with alcohol treatment whilst in hospital and linking patients into community services in preparation for discharge.

The post holder will deliver training to health care professionals in various settings about identification and brief advice, alcohol awareness and the physical effects of alcohol and alcohol withdrawal.

As a member of the alcohol care team you will provide a liaison service to teams across UHS for some of the most complex and vulnerable patients who have often experienced significant levels of trauma and have complex social situations as well as comorbid physical and mental health conditions.

The alcohol care team are seeking to develop to meet the ACTION standards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will work across professional, departmental and Trust boundaries supporting patient-centred seamless care, with responsibility for assessing and guiding treatment for individual patient’s alcohol care needs.

You will be a skilled practitioner in the assessment and management of alcohol use disorder, able to deliver care which meets up to date national guidance and research.

Interventions you will provide include Identification and brief advice (IBA), medically assisted alcohol withdrawal (MAAW) and motivational interviewing (MI).

You will require knowledge of substance misuse and related services more broadly to support the patient group seen by the alcohol care team.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

* Essential Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC register
* Degree qualification, 120 credits at L6 or possess an equivalent knowledge to be assessed through evidence of relevant specialist training, experience or portfolio
* Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
* Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies
* Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice or evidence assessed to be of equivalent experience, demonstrating support to a range of learners in practice. Provide evidence of both supporting a range of learners in practice and supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
* Extensive post registration experience within specialist area.
* Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service.
* Understanding of personal accountability.
* Multidisciplinary team working.
