Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced midwife to join the Diabetes Midwifery Team. We are looking for an enthusiastic midwife with a passion for diabetes care to support our Diabetes In Pregnancy service and provide care to women with pre-existing and early onset gestational diabetes in the antenatal period.

The post holder will also be supporting the screening process for Gestational Diabetes and further management of women diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, which will include facilitating structured group education sessions. You will develop skills in caring for women with diabetes in pregnancy working closely within a specialist multidisciplinary team, and enhance knowledge regarding diabetes management in pregnancy.

We provide a team model of care that encompasses the recognition of additional medical and/or social complexities while respecting the importance of an individualised, holistic approach to pregnancy care.

Main duties of the job

The team consists of 4 midwives who are pivotal members of the wider Diabetes In Pregnancy Team.

The team provide antenatal care for women with Type 1, Type 2 and early onset gestational diabetes. This includes liaising with other agencies such as Children's social care and perinatal mental health services. We work within the wider multi-disciplinary team to ensure safe, individualised care for this high risk group. We also facilitate parent education sessions for the women booked under our care. We also support women as in-patients under our care on daily ward rounds.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated midwife that can incorporate kindness and compassion when caring for this high-risk group of women.

The diabetes midwives are responsible for following up all screening for gestational diabetes at the Trust and ensuring women diagnosed with gestational diabetes have the correct onward care. The team facilitate structured education sessions ran with the Diabetes dietitians. The post holder will learn new skills in reviewing glucose levels to confirm or exclude gestational diabetes (GDM) and support the nurse led gestational diabetes clinics reviewing the glucose levels of women with confirmed gestational diabetes and support commencing treatment when required.

The diabetes midwifery team also support training for other members of the maternity care team and students regarding caring for women with diabetes in pregnancy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder will:

1. Work in accordance with the NMC rules and code of conduct for midwives.
2. Maintain and develop their professional knowledge and competence in accordance within the NMC recommendations.
3. Work with the Trust policies and protocols and enable all members of the practice to carry out care within these guidelines.
4. Maintain good standards of care within their designated practice and assist in the implementation of recommendations from Government and professional bodies in relation to maternity care.
5. Work with the MPL in the monitoring of standards of care.
6. Maintain efficient and effective communication and working relationships with other professional groups and staff working within the Trust.
7. Utilise the full skills of a midwife (both integral and extended) in the provision of care to women and their families.
8. In liaison with the MPL ensure that midwifery practice is in keeping with current research findings and is appropriate for each individual woman for whom care is being provided.
9. Assume responsibility for the safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with the Policies and Statutory Rules and Regulations.
10. Assist the MPL with the co-ordination of the clinical activities of the practice and 'act up' when required.
11. Assist with orientation programmes which familiarise new members of staff with the organisational and clinical demands of the unit and group practice.
12. Supervise the work of the non-midwife, qualified or unqualified staff as well as midwifery, medical and nursing students.
13. Maintain stores and equipment ensuring proper economic use.
14. Report complaints, incidents and accidents to the MPL or midwifery manager and assist in their investigation and resolution.
15. Ensure that working conditions are safe in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act.
16. To be fully informed of the risk management strategy, be responsible for reporting incidents, risk assessment and development of action plans to reduce risk.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

17. Registered Midwife
18. Have completed a preceptorship programme

Desirable criteria

19. Mentorship/SSSA
20. Examination of the Newborn
21. NLS
22. HDU course

Experience

Essential criteria

23. Can practice as an autonomous midwife in the acute and primary care setting
24. Good written skills, well presented and fully completed application
25. Experience of working with women with Diabetes/ complex medical conditions

Desirable criteria

26. Confident in teaching and assessing student midwives
27. Able to act up for the Band 7
28. Demonstrate forward planning, problem recognition, pre-emption and resolution
29. Develops action plans and initiatives to improve the service

Skills

Essential criteria

30. Previous experience-worked in a variety of settings utilising all midwifery skills
31. Can demonstrate a forward-thinking approach Waterbirth and choice

Desirable criteria

32. Experience of taking charge of the ward
33. Experience of midwifery research and audit
