A Complex Care Nurse supports the safe and effective operation of the branch by providing clinical leadership, ensuring care colleague competency, and maintaining compliance with branch, CQC, and NMC standards. They act as a professional resource for colleagues, contribute to recruitment and onboarding, deliver clinical training and supervision, and uphold the highest standards of client care and governance.
Main Responsibilities
The Complex Care Nurse is responsible for supporting the safe and effective delivery of high-quality, person-centred care within the branch. They provide clinical leadership, ensure compliance with professional and regulatory standards, and act as a key source of guidance and support for Complex Care – Team Leaders and care colleagues. The Complex Care Nurse promotes best practice in all aspects of service delivery, contributes to quality assurance and governance activities, and helps maintain the branch’s commitment to excellence in care.
Clinical and professional leadership
* Liaise with families and act as a point of contact, ensuring open communication and timely updates on care matters as well as addressing any issues or concerns promptly.
* Lead on all clinical decision-making related to complex care, ensuring the highest standards of professional and safe practice.
* Conduct client assessments, including home visits, risk assessments, and care plan evaluations.
* Manage a defined caseload, ensuring person-centred, evidence-based care delivery.
* Provide expert clinical advice and support to the branch regarding care colleague allocation and client suitability.
* Deliver direct care and support in exceptional circumstances to ensure continuity.
* Oversee and manage safeguarding concerns for adults and children, escalating appropriately.
* Maintain professional record-keeping standards in line with NMC and branch policies.
* Ensure compliance with NICE, RCN, and national/local safeguarding standards.
* Use technology effectively to enhance communication, collaboration, and service delivery.
* Identify, develop, and maintain new business streams that support clinical service growth.
Education and training
* Deliver classroom and on-the-job training to care colleagues in routine and complex care tasks (e.g. tracheostomy, PEG, ventilation, seizure management etc).
* Conduct and document competency assessments to ensure carer colleagues deliver delegated tasks safely.
* Promote a learning culture and continuous development within care teams.
* Contribute to the development and maintenance of clinical competency frameworks aligned with best practice and regulatory expectations.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills to deliver effective, evidence-based training.
* Identify any training gaps and implement corrective actions in partnership with the Clinical Team.
Leadership and management
* Foster collaboration and clear communication supporting branch, Complex Care – Team Leaders and care colleagues.
* Work with multidisciplinary agencies to ensure seamless care delivery.
* Maintain professional registration and continuous professional development.

Quality and governance
* Promote continuous improvement and clinical excellence across all aspects of care delivery.

* Support the implementation of lessons learned and best practice improvements.
* Ensure compliance with company policies (Health & Safety, Infection Control, Data Protection, Safeguarding etc).
* Escalate risks and issues appropriately to maintain service integrity.

* Share best practice and market intelligence to strengthen service delivery.
* Support the Branch Manager in meeting service KPIs and quality objectives.
* Support branch growth by identifying and managing opportunities in complex care.
* Build partnerships with stakeholders and commissioners to enhance service reputation.
* Contribute to local and national forums and initiatives relevant to complex care.

Person Specification
Essential
* Registered Nurse (NMC) with active PIN.
* Minimum of 2 years’ clinical experience (hospital and/or community setting).
* Proven experience in complex care and person-centred planning.
* Strong knowledge of CQC standards, clinical risk management and governance frameworks, and safeguarding for adults and children.
* Excellent communication (verbal and written) and IT skills.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative.
* Effective leadership, influencing, and people management skills.
* Ability to interpret and analyse data to meet deadlines.
* Understanding and application of clinical governance principles.
* Full UK driving licence and access to a car (or ability to travel flexibly).
* Demonstrated alignment with branch values.
