This is an exciting opportunity to work within the Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist team. A lung cancer clinical nurse specialist provides specialist support for patients and their families during the lung cancer diagnosis pathway, treatment and living with and beyond. Acting as a key link between the different health care teams and services as a patient advocate and voice. The role involves offering emotional and practical support and advice, co-ordinating care, managing symptoms, giving information on investigations/ treatments and delivering MDT outcome to both patients and families. There is a requirement to work on behalf of the managing consultant to make internal and external referrals, request investigations (within training limitations), reviews patients symptoms and performance and liaise with other AHP on their behalf.

The Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist should have expert knowledge and skill in line with the lung cancer diagnostic pathway and treatment pathway options. This requires effective communication skills and the ability to psychologically support patients and families.

The role requires the ability to work autonomously and independently but within an integrated collaborative team.

Interviews for this position will be held in person ONLY at York Hospital. Remote interviews will not be available.

Main duties of the job

The Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist acts as a key worker for patients diagnosed or going through a lung cancer diagnosis pathway. They act as a patient advocate, ensuring patients remain well informed and involved with decisions throughout their pathway. Offering ongoing psychological support to both patients and families throughout diagnosis, treatment and living with and beyond cancer.

A Lung Cancer Clinical nurse specialist is a clinical expect in the lung cancer diagnosis to pathway and treatments. They are responsible for on going professional development maintaining up to date knowledge and skills within lung cancer. Having an active role in service and pathway developments.

To attend and be a core member of the lung cancer MDT. Co-ordinate investigations, treatments and arrangements for patients under the diagnostic and treatment pathway. Provide specialist advice to support ward staff including education. Facilitate effective communication and referrals to external services.

Provide Holistic needs assessment for all patients diagnosed with a Lung cancer at diagnosis and at points throughout their treatment and ongoing monitoring. Support ongoing care post treatment as part of a nurse lead Follow up pathway. Including the requesting of follow up investigations such as CT thorax escalating abnormal finding to the responsible consultant.

Work as a point of contact for patients throughout the diagnostic and treatment pathway, giving results including breaking bad news. Support patients in decision's regarding EOL care and advanced care planning. Make ongoing referrals to primary and secondary services.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. NMC Registered Nurse (Level 1) - adult
2. Evidence of continued professional development
3. Recognised teaching and assessing qualification
4. Understanding of national guidance on Cancer pathways (NOLCP)

Experience

Essential criteria

5. Use excellent communication and interpersonal skills to provide highly complex, highly sensitive and emotionally distressing information to patients with Lung cancer, tailored to the individual’s needs.
6. Experience at Band 5 or equivalent, within the specialty

Desirable criteria

7. Post registration qualification in the specialty
