Locum Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory

Thisis a 6PA 6-Month Locum consultant post supporting the Paediatric Respiratoryteam (Dr Tim Lee, Dr Chris Edwards, Dr Alex Adams, Dr Emma Guy, Dr EvieRobson, Dr Laura Walker). You must beable to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in allaspects of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine, Cystic Fibrosis, and PrimaryCiliary Dyskinesia. It is desirable that the candidates have experience inbronchoscopy, sleep and CLD. The postwill be based at Leeds Childrens Hospital.

To deliver care to patients within thePaediatric Respiratory department at the Leeds Childrens Hospital:

Supervision of patients

Care of in-patients

2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues inother relevant site specialist teams within Paediatrics and across the LeedsChildrens Hospital.

2.3 To work with colleagues in PaediatricRespiratory to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 6) for PaediatricRespiratory Medicine. This includes both out-of-hours cover (remote, band B)in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours and at weekends.

2.4 To contribute to research, teaching andnew developments within the Paediatric Respiratory Service. The post holderwill be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinicalresearch programs on going in the department and maintain an up to date GoodClinical Practice certificate (GCP).


Main duties of the job

TheTrust expects consultants to deliver clinical service as agreed withcommissioners and other stakeholders. This will include:

continuously improving the qualityand efficiency of personal and team practice

working with other staff and teams toensure that the various criteria for service delivery are met, such as

oachieving the best clinicaloutcomes within the resources available

owaiting times

oinfection control standards

Consultantsin LTHT are line managed by their specialty Lead Clinician working inconjunction with a Business Manager. This specialty team is then managedalongside a number of other specialties in a Clinical Service (or Support) Unit(CSU) led by a Clinical Director as the responsible person and supported by afull time General Manager and a full time Head of Nursing.

TheClinical Director and their team report operationally to the Chief OperatingOfficer (COO). The Clinical Director will work closely with the Chief OperatingOfficers team which includes two Medical Directors for Operations, NurseDirectors for Operations, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Assistant Directorsof Operations (ADOs) and a Performance Team, with each ADO aligned to specificCSUs.

Professionally, consultants report to Dr MagnusHarrison, Chief Medical Officer

Thisis a 6PA locum appointment for a Consultant in Respiratory and CysticFibrosis, with special interests in CLD.

Thispost will deliver 6PAs supporting the Paediatric Respiratory team (Dr TimLee, Dr Chris Edwards, Dr Alex Adams, Dr Emma Guy, Dr Evie Robson, Dr LauraWalker)

Thepost will be based at the Leeds General Infirmary. All of Leeds tertiarypaediatric services take place in the Leeds Childrens Hospital, within LeedsGeneral Infirmary in Leeds city centre which has excellent transport links.Since April 2010 the regional paediatric respiratory and cystic fibrosisservice has been based at a new purpose-built outpatient facility within theChildrens Hospital. Leeds is also the nationally commissioned supra-regionalcentre for childrens Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) for the North ofEngland.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

Todeliver care to patients within the Paediatric Respiratory department at theLeeds Childrens Hospital:

Supervision of patients

Care of in-patients on an on-callrota (1 in 7)

Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

3.1 General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must holdaccreditation in Paediatric Respiratory in the Royal College of Paediatricsand Child Health or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training(or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK.

Applicantsmust be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted tothe Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UKor have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Directorand Clinical Director.

Applicantsmust provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevantRoyal College at the time of application, in order for their application tobe progressed further.

3.2 Experience

Theappointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience andcompetence in all aspects of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and appropriateexperience in CLD and Sleep. It is desirable that the candidates haveexperience in the conduct of clinical trials.

3.3Person specification

3.4 Clinical Audit

Theappointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take thelead in the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings;

Development and application ofagreed clinical guidelines.

Thisis to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as asupporting programmed activity. Itwould be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendanceat the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance wouldbe recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

Inthe discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected tomaintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriatecontinuing medical education.

4. TEACHING

TheTrust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with theUniversity of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching andall Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriatecontribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The post-holder will be requiredto participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school ofMedicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinicalarea basis.

Thepost-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues todeliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trustcontract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.

Theappointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to theteaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs inRespiratory Medicine in the Local Education and Training Board.

5. JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTS

The job plan review will takeplace annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician forPaediatric Respiratory medicine The annual job plan review may result in arevised job plan. There may be an interimreview of the job plan where duties, responsibilities, accountabilityarrangements or objectives have changed or need to change significantlywithin the area.

5.1 Proposed Job Plan

Thepost consists of 6PAs with 4.5PAs of direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 PAsof supporting professional activity (SPA). These 6PAs will be delivered inthe Respiratory Unit.

Thisjob plan will fit together with colleagues job-plans with a careful rota ofclinical sessions, to ensure robust cover. For example, on a 1:7 rota thepost holder will have a week of on call, with cross-cover from other membersof the team.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MB BS (or Equivalent)
* Completed Grid training in paediatric respiratory medicine
* Valid BLS training
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Either achieved certificate of completion of training or be within 6 months of completion.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
* Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
* Well organised and skilled in good time management Effective interpersonal skills
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely
* Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English.
* Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time
* Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application


Experience

* Must have had some experience either through training or post graduate experience of tertiary respiratory paediatrics, as demonstrated through completion of Paediatric Respiratory Grid training.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research


Additional Requirements

* Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and to be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary. Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good MedicalPractice
* Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK,
* have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
