Consultant Psychiatrist - Canterbury and Coastal Community, Canterbury

This role offers the opportunity to demonstrate clinical expertise across various areas within a supportive team environment, including nurses, OTs, psychologists, assistant psychologists, and mental health wellbeing practitioners. There are opportunities for teaching, management, and quality improvement initiatives.

The team is currently being trained in Open Dialogue, a new approach that has brought a refreshing perspective to staff working in the CMHT, potentially leading to improved wellbeing for both staff and patients.

Located in Kent, a large county with a rich rural history and close links to London, this setting provides a great environment for personal and professional development.


Main duties of the job

* Provide medical input to patients under the care of the Community Mental Health Team, attend CPAs for enhanced patients, and provide urgent assessments/advice as required.
* Lead screening of new referrals to the team on a rotational basis.
* Participate in service evaluation and planning for future service development.
* Empower the team to resolve local issues using quality improvement tools and methods.
* Manage, appraise, and supervise junior medical staff, including assessing competencies under the Modernising Medical Careers framework.
* Participate in service and business planning activities.
* Join the Consultant on-call rota, currently 1:30 (non-residential), with additional remuneration and PA sessions.

Qualifications and Registration

* MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
* Higher degree in medical education, research, or management (preferred)
* Additional clinical qualifications
* GMC registration with a license to practice
* On the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of eligibility
* Approved clinician status or within 3 months of appointment
* Approved under S12 or within 3 months of appointment
* Good standing with GMC
* Valid UK driving license or alternative evidence


Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential:

* Excellent knowledge and clinical skills in the specialty
* Strong communication skills in English
* Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
* Decision-making based on evidence and experience
* Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA
* Wide range of specialist experience within NHS or comparable service


Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

* Ability to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
* Leadership and teamwork skills
* Commitment to continuous professional development
* Experience in research or service evaluation
* Ability to use and appraise clinical evidence
