Junior Clinical Fellow in Neurosurgery The closing date is 17 June 2026
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint Junior Clinical Fellows in Neurosurgery, with start date on 5th August 2026. The tenure of all posts is until 03rd August 2027. These posts do not attract a National Training Number.
Applicants should have a medical degree or diploma from a recognised university or institution and be registered with the General Medical Council with a licence to practise. They are also required to have evidence of foundation competencies with a minimum of 12 months clinical experience post eligibility for full registration with the GMC.
This post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to an ST1-2 trainee in Neurosurgery.

Main duties of the job The Sheffield Neurosurgical Department is a regional unit serving a population of approximately 2.2 million covering South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, and North Lincolnshire. The Adult Neurosurgical Service is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital with a 52‑bed unit, including a 7‑bed Neuro‑Critical care and a 13‑bed HDU. The Sheffield Neurosurgical Unit also includes the National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery which comprises two gamma knives, including a Lexsell Perfexion.

Job responsibilities The appointee will be responsible in their duties to all the Consultant Neurosurgeons and in some specific aspects of duties to any person that may be nominated by them.
Clinical
Provide day‑to‑day clinical care of the neurosurgical patients assigned.
Take part in ward rounds – daily business ward rounds and additional Consultant ward rounds.
Assist at or perform various operations within range of competence.
Attend outpatient clinics as required.
Provide out‑of‑hours services in rotation with other junior staff (no locums); others on the firm cover leave.
Undertake any specific clinical and related responsibilities delegated by the Consultant Neurosurgeons.
Teach junior doctors, undergraduate medical students, nursing and other paraclinical staff as appropriate.
Take part and present cases at joint weekly departmental (Neurosciences, Neuroradiology, Neuropathology) and MDT meetings, at the regular Audit meetings, at the weekly Neurosurgical Trainees Teaching, and on the weekly Grand Round.
Record relevant clinical details and maintain accurate case notes for patients admitted under the care of the firm. Summarise clinical findings on presentation of all emergency patients admitted when working out of hours (full shift).
Prepare detailed operation notes on the day surgery is performed with short, relevant pre‑operative clinical data.
Prepare discharge summaries on the day of discharge.
Deal with outpatient and other correspondence in an appropriate and timely manner.
Participation will be expected in the neurosurgical teaching programmes (including audit) and also to attend counselling sessions and professional review.
Person Specification Qualifications
Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise.
Medical Degree from a recognised UK or overseas university or institution.
Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent by the date of application (ALS).
Attendance at relevant courses, e.g. ATLS, Basic Surgical Skills or equivalent, CCrlSP.
MRCS part 1.
Clinical experience
Evidence of achievement of foundation competences from a UKFPO‑affiliated foundation programme or equivalent.
12 months NHS experience (not clinical attachment).
6 months Neurosurgery experience.
Interest in Neurosurgery.
Research
Willingness to contribute to research activities.
Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
Teaching and training
Willingness to contribute to teaching activities.
Experience in provision of clinical teaching or training.
Continuous Professional Development
Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months.
Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio.
Personal attributes
Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work as part of a team.
