Collections Assistant
Part time (22.2 hours per week), permanent, reporting to the Archivist responsible for the archive collections at Lancashire Archives, based at Lancashire Archives in Preston.
Our service
Lancashire Archives cares for 900 years of the county’s history. Millions of items are stored on 9 miles of shelving in the strongrooms in Preston. Our collections include everything from medieval parchments to digital sound recordings. We collect and preserve archives so that Lancashire’s stories will be told in the future and to ensure they are also available for everyone to use and enjoy today. We are an Accredited Archive Service, supported by an amazing team of volunteers and the Friends of Lancashire Archives.
Lancashire Archives forms part of Lancashire County Council's Cultural Services, which also includes the Lancashire Library Service, operating around the County and offering a range of services including access to local history collections maintained and accessed within library buildings.
The role
As a Collections Assistant you will play a key role in helping provide access to and caring for the local history collections at Lancashire Archives.
You will help produce collections information for customers. This will involve processing large volumes of archival material, so manual handling experience is essential. After careful examination of the material deposited with us you will produce summary box lists using our archive management system, package, and locate the boxes in our archive strong rooms.
We provide volunteers with opportunities to work on our collections and providing them with training and support will also be part of what you do.
About You
You will have an interest in and enthusiasm for history and preferably have experience of working with archive or local history collections. You must have excellent customer service, research, and ICT skills and preferably some experience of using an electronic library or archive management system (for example, DS CALM or Talis Alto). You will also need to communicate effectively and with a range of audiences and be able to take ownership of projects and work independently.
If you would like an informal discussion or any further information, please contact Keri Nicholson (01772 533034) or David Tilsley (01772 533031)
In return Lancashire County Council offers a range of benefits, which can be found on LCC Vacancies website.
We reserve the right to close down a vacancy early, before the closing date, if we receive sufficient applications.
Please ensure you have uploaded and attached your supporting statement to evidence how you meet the criteria for the role. The panel may be unable to shortlist you for interview without this evidence.
This position is part time, please note the salary quoted is full time equivalent, the salary received will be paid on a pro–rata basis.
