Job Responsibilities
* Provide specialised technical services for preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection and repair to a wide range of complex and patient-critical beds, treatment couches, treatment chairs, and pressure relief mattress systems.
* Communicate with clinical users to gain a clear understanding of the nature of problems with equipment, assess seriousness and implications, and respond appropriately to the urgency of the request.
* Undertake advanced fault-finding, diagnosing problems beyond manufacturer supplied information, report novel fault conditions to manufacturers, and determine causes of faults in devices with multiple complex and inter-related systems.
* Rectify complex equipment faults and undertake repairs on complex mechanisms to component level.
* Check that equipment performs to manufacturer specification, carry out calibration, quality control, safety, commissioning and acceptance testing, as well as electrical and functional safety checks.
* Carry out commissioning and decommissioning of medical devices and undertake loan medical device acceptance testing.
* Remove unsafe or uneconomic equipment from service and prepare it for safe disposal.
* Liaise with clinical staff to adjust planned maintenance schedules in response to short-term clinical needs.
* Advise on equipment specification, evaluation and selection.
* Maintain auditable maintenance and technical records on departmental asset‑management system to comply with ISO9001 accreditation.
* Issue appropriate components and spares from stores, monitor stock levels and reorder where necessary.
* Take responsibility for all tools and equipment within the holder’s care, ensuring workshop facilities remain clear and well‑ordered.
* Provide technical advice to medical and other staff groups as required.
* Liaise with manufacturers to obtain information and provide feedback on equipment performance.
* Provide technical expertise and assistance to other functions within the Department as appropriate.
* Keep accurate records of all work performed and update all appropriate records.
* Inform the Head of Medical Engineering and other EME staff of equipment condition and performance.
* Participate in meetings with the Head of Medical Engineering and the wider EME team.
* Ensure customers receive high‑quality, prompt and efficient service and are kept up to date on progress.
* Follow incident reporting procedures.
* Prioritise and manage own workload.
* Take responsibility for the work of other EME staff when they are performing work under the holder’s direction.
* Teach and train other staff groups (doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, technical staff) in operation and care of beds, treatment couches, treatment chairs and mattress replacement systems.
* Train other technicians in the full range of techniques and methods used in the EME.
* Provide guidance and technical training to junior members of the EME team.
* Participate in clinical trials and evaluation of beds, treatment couches, treatment chairs and mattress replacement systems.
* Keep abreast of technical developments, enrol in appropriate Continuing Professional Development programs, and attend suitable seminars and courses.
Person Specification
* Qualifications (Essential): Educated to HNC/D level or equivalent experience as a Band 5 Engineer in a specialist area.
* Knowledge (Essential): Experience of using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
* Desirable: Extensive knowledge of specialist areas acquired through manufacturer training or equivalent experience, OEM training on electric profiling beds, patient trolleys, treatment couches and pressure relief systems; experience with EQUIP or similar asset‑management systems.
