At Wayland Additive, we are redefining what’s possible in metal additive manufacturing. Our team is building some of the most advanced, high-tech industrial machinery on the market—powered by our proprietary NeuBeam technology—and we're looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to help us push the limits even further.
As part of our world-class engineering team, you’ll be working hands-on with complex, cutting-edge systems that are reshaping how industries approach manufacturing. From initial concept through to full production release, you’ll lead the design and development of precision-engineered components and subsystems using advanced CAD tools. You’ll collaborate across departments—including production, sales, service, and procurement—to bring real, innovative solutions to life inside one of the most exciting engineering environments in the UK.
What You’ll Be Doing:
* Design Innovation: Create high-precision mechanical systems and components for next-gen additive manufacturing equipment, using SolidWorks and advanced design tools.
* Creative Problem Solving: Tackle complex technical challenges with ingenuity—whether that’s creating entirely new mechanisms or improving existing designs based on field data, customer feedback, or developing and carrying out tests to find results.
* Project Ownership: Drive design projects from initial concept to release, including documentation, testing, review, and stakeholder coordination.
* Leadership & Collaboration: Take the lead on technical initiatives, mentor team members, and work closely with both industrial and high level academic, cross-functional colleagues to ensure robust, production-ready solutions.
* Continuous Learning: Absorb deep knowledge of the machine’s subsystems and processes, through hands-on exposure, expert mentoring, and formal training—eventually becoming a key technical authority within the team.
* Communication & Influence: Present and explain your design intent to peers and stakeholders clearly and confidently. Facilitate smooth transitions from design to procurement, production, and field implementation.
* Design for Manufacture (DFM): Develop parts and assemblies that are cost-effective and production-ready, while maintaining functionality and meeting tight tolerances.
* Documentation & Standards: Maintain high-quality records of design changes, testing outcomes, and release notes—always working to BS8888 standards and using SolidWorks PDM to manage design workflows.
What We’re Looking For:
Must have:
* A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent level experience
* Minimum of 5 years' experience in mechanical or industrial design
* Strong 3D CAD proficiency, with experience managing complex assemblies
* A creative, innovation-driven mindset with a passion for technology and engineering excellence
* Great communication skills and a proactive, collaborative approach to problem-solving
* An analytical thinker with a methodical approach to design challenges and troubleshooting
* A desire to get hands on with assembling, preparing and carrying out testing on sub-assemblies and machine level tests.
Beneficial:
* Experience or interest in simulation tools (e.g., SolidWorks Simulation, COMSOL) is beneficial
* Experience with vacuum, pneumatics, water systems, powder systems, and high temperatures is a plus
All applicants must have the right to work in the UK. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role
