The role
Are you a skilled, highly motivated, enthusiastic and creative teaching assistant with a desire to make a difference? Moor Hall School is looking for a Specialist Teaching Assistant to support one of our pupils with a visual impairment. This will incorporate working in collaboration with senior leaders and teaching staff to support the delivery of our broad and varied curriculum and develop ‘The Moor Hall Child’ alongside individualised support We are looking for a kind, caring and committed individual who has the passion and energy to inspire our children. You will need to have excellent communication skills and be able to form positive relationships with our children, staff, parents and governors. As we are looking to add a specific skillset to our team, this individual will need to have a level of proficiency in reading and using Braille. You will bring experience of working with visually impaired pupils and will be able to support and adapt learning alongside promoting independence. Essential: Experience of working with a young person with visual impairment Experience of working with tactile resources Experience of tailoring learning activities to ensure they are accessible Ability to anticipate and mitigate risk for the young person when they are moving around independently Ability to work with specialist professionals Ability to work as part of a team and provide feedback to the class teacher Willingness to develop skills in Braille Ability to or willingness to learn to use specialist equipment (eg visualiser) to support pupil Clear insights as to when to step in to support and when to allow pupil to be independent Desirable: Knowledge of the KS1 curriculum We can offer you a fresh, new challenge, wonderful children and a supportive staff team. Job Purpose This level is applicable to experienced teaching assistants whose working role calls for competence across a varied range of responsibilities. To support teaching staff in the development and education of pupils including the provision of specialist skills as appropriate. To support the inclusion, independence, and educational development of a pupil with a visual impairment within our mainstream school. Working under the direction of the SENDCo and class teacher, you will help ensure the pupil can fully access the curriculum, develop independence and participate fully in school life. You will support the pupil throughout the school day, adapt learning resources, and produce materials in Braille. Key Responsibilities Support for pupils (either individually or in groups) Support the activities of individuals or groups Establish and maintain relationships with individual pupils and groups. Contribute to individual Education Plans as appropriate. Support pupils during learning activities. Promote pupils’ social and emotional development. Contribute to the health and well-being of pupils. Provide support for bilingual/ multilingual pupils (where appropriate to the focus of the role). Support children with specific needs (where appropriate to the focus of the role), for example, sensory and/ or physical impairment, cognitive or learning difficulties, behavioural, emotional and social development needs, communication and interaction difficulties. Support pupils with literacy and numeracy skills Support pupils to access the curriculum. Dealing with the personal care needs of children where appropriate in line with the guidance of the local authority Support for the teacher(s) Observe and report on pupil performance Contribute to the planning and evaluation of learning activities. Assist in preparing and maintaining the learning environment. Contribute to the management of pupils’ behaviour. Contribute to maintaining pupils’ records Support the maintenance of pupils’ safety and security. Supervise the whole class for a short time in an emergency (normally for a period less than a whole lesson until the teacher returns or alternative arrangements are made) or for a very short period of planned absence for less than a whole lesson Undertake routine marking in line with school policy Provide general administrative support, for example, administer coursework, produce worksheets etc. Undertake joint home visits as appropriate and in line with LEA policy To provide direct specialist support one-to-one, encouraging independence and social interaction. Specialist TA support for VI pupil Contribute to planning, recording and implementation of individualised programmes of work. Work with teachers in lesson planning, evaluating and modifying lesson plans as appropriate. To monitor and evaluate pupils’ responses to learning activities through observation and planned recording of achievement, providing objective and accurate feedback. To contribute information for progress reports, annual review reports, and Educational Health Care Plans. To be involved in Special Educational Needs review and progress meetings as appropriate, either through contribution or attendance. To prepare support materials and assist with classroom activities. To ensure that teaching materials and resources are adapted and/or enlarged and that other strategies are in place. To support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use. To facilitate the development of social skills and emotional development. This providing support for pupils during off site educational visits. To participate in performance management programmes to develop competencies to effectively support pupils with visual impairment. Support for the school Support the development and effectiveness of team work within the school environment. Develop and maintain working relationships with other professionals. Liaise with parents as appropriate. Review and develop own professional practice. Work as required across the curriculum and in all Key Stages within the school in accordance with the job. Support for the curriculum Support the use of information and communication technology in the classroom General Individuals have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people he/she is responsible for or comes into contact with. To ensure their tasks are carried out with due regard to Health and Safety To participate in appropriate professional development including adhering to the principle of performance management. To adhere to the ethos of the school To promote the agreed vision and aims of the school To set an example of personal integrity and professionalism Attendance at appropriate staff meetings and parents evenings Any other duties as commensurate within the grade in order to ensure the smooth running of the school
