A Consultant is a senior and experienced clinician who works autonomously in one of the medical or surgical specialities and manages the delivery of care by other doctors (for example resident and some SAS doctors). Consultants serve as experts in their specialty and they have responsibility for the care of patients referred to them, even when care is carried out by others. A key aspect of the role is leading multidisciplinary teams delivering care. This involves being able to take an overview of the care pathway and managing other team members accordingly.Consultants are expected to be involved in the teaching and training of students and resident doctors, and to contribute to their specialty field through research and leadership.
Main duties of the job
The principle duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients within the trust area.
·To, at all times, comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor
·To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
·To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your clinical director.
·To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of any Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
·On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s Corporate Induction.
·To participate in the Trust’s statutory and mandatory training programme
·To fully participate in the Consultant Peer Support Scheme and ensure personal attendance, when invited, at the Consultant Development Programme during your first year in post.
·To be responsible for the clinical management of in and out patients under your care.

Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
8. Able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and skill.
9. Knowledge of good medical practice and GMC requirements.
10. Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and audit.
11. Experience in teaching & supervising medical students and junior trainees.
12. Able to teach clinical skills.
13. Able to critically review and apply research to clinical situations.
14. Experience of undertaking audits and presenting their findings.
15. Written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients & colleagues.
16. Able to communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary team members, patients, relatives, GPs and other agencies.
17. Able & willing to take on leadership roles.
18. Strategic thinker with enquiring, critical approach to work.
19. Capable of building trust and confidence.
20. Open to new ideas; willing to learn and develop.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
30. FCRS Urol or equivalent.
31. Eligible for full GMC registration with license to practice.
32. Entry on the relevant GMC Specialist Register via: - CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) - Or CESR.
33. Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
Desirable criteria
34. MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research in relevant Specialty.
35. Substantive NHS experience.
36. Experience of setting up and/or developing clinical services.
37. Experience of supervising SpRs/specialist trainees.
38. Higher teaching qualification.
39. Research experience & peer-reviewed journal publications.
40. Experience in designing & implementing audit programmes.
41. Successful completion of advanced communication skills training.
42. Familiarity with issues of service organisation and development.
43. Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities to local, regional or national levels.
