Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a Special Interest
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in Urogynaecology to join our dynamic team. This is a Somerset wide role with the base at Yeovil District Hospital.
A substantive post offering up to 1 WTE (discussion on application) in a generalist role with dedicated time for urogynaecology, within a department that delivers high-quality care across a wide range of specialist services.
Main duties of the job
* Provide high-quality obstetric and gynaecological care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings.
* Participate in the 1:12 on-call rota, including twice-daily consultant-led ward rounds on Labour Ward.
* Lead and support general antenatal and gynaecology clinics, day surgery and inpatient theatre lists, elective caesarean lists, obstetric triage and ambulatory gynaecology procedure sessions.
* Contribute to departmental teaching, supervision, and appraisal of junior doctors.
* Engage in clinical governance, audit, and service development.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated, patient‑centred care.
* Participate in research and quality improvement initiatives.
Within Urogynaecology
* Provide specialist assessment and management of women with pelvic floor and lower urinary tract disorders.
* Lead outpatient urogynaecology clinics, including pessary management, complex prolapse assessment, and incontinence clinics.
* Provide surgical management for pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence in accordance with current RCOG/British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) standards.
* Participate in local and regional MDT meetings (urogynaecology, pelvic floor).
* Support the Trust's mesh surveillance/complications pathway in line with NICE and BSUG recommendations.
* Contribute to development of new models of care including day case pelvic floor surgical pathway, ambulatory therapies, and enhanced recovery pathways.
Job responsibilities (Additional supervisory aspects)
Consultants are required to supervise the education of doctors in training, and doctors in post graduate roles. The post holder will be involved with teaching and training of doctors and should help with both their professional and personal development. Consultants must ensure that junior doctors in their care are not overwhelmed by clinical commitments or overburdened by responsibilities inappropriate to the experience required. Consultants are also responsible for the assessment and appraisal of trainees under their supervision and must keep the Clinical and/or College Tutor aware of problems that may arise.
Qualifications
* Medical Degree or equivalent.
* Royal College membership, or equivalent.
* Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of applying.
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview date), CESR or European Community Rights.
* Relevant CCT or equivalent (or within 6 months of interview).
* An appropriate higher degree or qualification (MD, PhD or equivalent).
* MSc or equivalent higher qualification.
* A special interest in Urogynaecology or hold an ATSM relevant to service need.
Experience
* Depth and breadth of clinical experience in urogynaecology.
* Advanced training in Urogynaecology (e.g., ATSM/SITM or subspecialty training).
* Experience in elective and emergency general obstetrics and gynaecology.
* Competence in outpatient and surgical management of pelvic floor conditions.
* Additional specialist training in advanced pelvic floor or continence procedures.
* Experience with mesh complication pathways and BSUG database activity.
