Salary: £45,000 - £50,000, depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Location: Office Base is Salford, MediaCityUK, Dock House. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.

Job Introduction

We’re looking for a talented Software Engineer in Test, who is passionate about testing, as well as delivering innovative technology, to join our cross-discipline agile team, where you’ll help shape the future of TV products for millions of viewers.

Based in MediaCityUK, Salford, you’ll join our Product TV team to deliver a world-class connected TV experience for BBC iPlayer and Sounds. Your work will involve developing innovative application features, performing integrations across a range of TV devices, and enhancing the TV platform that powers both iPlayer and BBC Sounds. You will be engaged in all aspects of SDLC, including architectural changes, designs, development, testing and delivery, working closely with discipline leads. Whilst demonstrating audience advocacy throughout the delivery lifecycle, you will be reviewing new features to be implemented and be held accountable for leading and contributing in all related testing activities, ensuring delivery of high quality experiences to our audiences! As an engineer in our team, you can spend 10% time of your time learning new skills, playing with new technology and developing yourself, because we understand the need to stay up to date and fresh in a constantly changing technical landscape.

The ideal candidate would be enthusiastic, driven and value collaborative working. You have a keen eye for detail, ensuring software quality throughout. You enjoy thinking outside the box, and have a proactive desire to learn, grow, develop, and support in evolving and elevating the test discipline as well as wanting to work in a high-performing team, leading testing for complex and critical projects. Alongside this, we would look for you to be an active participant in fostering a collaborative culture throughout the organisation through active dissemination of knowledge, coaching, mentoring and inspiring other members of the test team.

Main Responsibilities

· Write, advise on best practices for, and maintain automation tests (including Performance tests)

· Lead the definition and execution of Automation Test approaches that meets complex product needs

· Active participation in helping improve your team’s software development methodologies

· Mentor and coach other testers to help build knowledge, skills and expertise within the department

· Contributing towards test process improvements and effectiveness through experimentation and keeping up with the latest technologies

· Working closely with test leadership to deliver and execute Test Strategy to evolve and elevate the test discipline

· Active engagement with wider test community forums to learn and share knowledge

· Collaborating in shaping and implementation of test automation frameworks and delivery pipelines

· Working with your team to define and ensure appropriate level of test coverage both automation & manual

· Work with AWS systems and monitoring tools such as Cloudwatch, Piano analytics or equivalent

· Taking ownership of Defect management for small/medium projects, including triaging, debugging, analysing or hypothesising towards root cause

· Ensuring ownership of test environment and test data requirements for testing tasks and projects

· Learn new technologies and apply your learning to projects where appropriate

· Perform ad-hoc exploratory testing to support new features

· Working with the team, make technical decisions and provide insight to peers and colleagues

· Review and give constructive feedback on others' code

· Contribute to the team's approach to quality and testing

· Ensure technical documentation is accurate and coherent

· Learn new methodologies and keep up to date with software development tools and technologies

· Participate in all aspects of the team’s work, including presenting the work of the team to other parts of the BBC and beyond

· Support and decommission legacy systems

· Participate in recruitment activities for the team and the wider department


Are you the right candidate?

· Self motivated, proactive and inquisitive attitude to work

· Outstanding communication skills

· Experience in testing Web/Mobile &/Or TV platforms/devices

· Experience in testing non-functional aspects - Performance, Load, Accessibility & Automation including Playwright

· Experience working in multi-discipline teams, ideally using Agile methodologies (sprints, scrum)

· Experience with writing Automation tests

· Proven ability to test, deploy and support software in a complex, high volume, high performance environment

· Proven track record of coaching more junior team members

· Actively embraces many aspects of extreme programming such as pair programming, TDD and CI

· Experience of leading the implementation of user stories to a successful conclusion

· A great attention to detail and prominent organisational skills

· Strong attention to detail and the ability to explain complex information to stakeholders at all levels

· Strong leadership skills

· Ability to understand complex requirements and translate them into suitable system designs and further break the work down into smaller tasks and stories

· Experience of AWS cloud technologies, such as EC2, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, AWS Lambda
