Job overview

UHSussex has secured external funding for the role of Research Laboratory Technician. The Clinical Research Facility (CRF) provides support to researchers working within the Trust on clinical trials and other scientific research projects. The post holder will be based in the CRF satellite laboratory next to the pathology department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The post holder will carry out specimen reception, processing, storage and shipment for clinical trials in accordance with clinical protocols, laboratory manuals/SOPs, local procedures and GCP.


Main duties of the job

* Checking all samples before processing for identification, status and suitability for diagnostic and research investigations.
* Prioritising samples to ensure timely and efficient processing while meeting acceptance criteria for testing.
* Processing, storing and shipment of clinical trial samples in accordance with laboratory protocols and clinical trial SOPs and the CRF lab and Trust health and safety procedures.
* Carrying out routine maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment to ensure correct functioning.
* Resolving lab queries and maintaining records to preserve the integrity of departmental documents and archives.
* Organising and shipping biological substances worldwide, including paperwork and permits in accordance with IATA requirements.
* Working in close liaison with medical, nursing and technical staff within the departments.
* General laboratory tasks including cleaning equipment, defrosting and cleaning specimen fridges/freezers and tidying work areas.
* Preparing reagents, stock solutions and laboratory disinfectants as directed.
* Taking on other tasks, responsibilities and training as deemed fit by the Laboratory Manager.
* Mentoring new staff and sharing knowledge with the team.
* Participating in appraisal processes and contributing to regular reviews.
* Working additional hours or on-call duties as assessed competent.
* Handling and dispatch of high risk samples daily, ensuring Good Laboratory Practice is followed.
* Managing dry ice shipments and relevant legal documentation for high risk samples.


Education & training

* Participates in induction of new and junior staff as directed.
* Responsible for own personal development and attends courses as directed.
* Attends statutory and mandatory training and maintains updates in IATA and GCP training.


Information management & technology

* Works within SOPs to ensure high quality data and maintains laboratory databases accurately.
* Reports non-functional hardware to senior staff.
* Enters samples into tracking systems as required and complies with data security policies.


Health & safety

* Adheres to all H&S policies and handles potentially infectious samples with care.
* Maintains safe working practices and reports defects.
* Applies training on PPE, manual handling, fire safety and COSHH; follows emergency procedures.
* Understands and follows policies for clinical waste disposal and incident reporting.
* Maintains awareness of risk and works within defined control measures.
* Responsible for handling known high risk samples and for dry ice/packaging according to guidelines.


Person specification

* NVQ 3 or equivalent in scientific discipline
