Salary: Grade I. Scale 35 - £46,142 to Scale 39 - £50,269 with a professional bar at SCP 37 £48,226**

Hours Per Week: 36 hours

Base Location: Tame Street Depot, Tame Street, Stalybridge, SK15 1ST

The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Highway Engineer to join our dynamic engineering services team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the design and delivery of complex highway projects that will shape the future of transport and connectivity across the borough.

As a Senior Highway Engineer, you will play a key role in managing delivery of the council’s Highway Asset Management plan. You will also lead on the delivery of projects in the Design team, liaising with clients and stakeholders, and ensuring technical excellence across all stages of project development and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead the design and delivery of highway engineering projects from feasibility through to detailed design and construction.
* Manage multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
* Prepare and review technical reports, drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
* Ensure compliance with relevant standards, regulations, and best practices (e.g., DMRB, Manual for Streets).
* Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and technical assistants
* Engage with clients, elected members, local authorities, and contractors to ensure successful project outcomes.
* Support business development activities and contribute to bids and proposals.
* Lead on highway maintenance and innovation and a commitment to decarbonisation.

About You

Requirements

* Degree (Level 6) in Civil, Structural or Highway Engineering or a related discipline.
* Proven experience in highway maintenance and design.
* Strong understanding of UK highway standards and design procedures.
* Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
* Possess a full driving licence.
