Offer description

To ensure the school premises are well-maintained, clean and secure in order to create a safe working environment for pupils, staff, and visitors, under direction of appropriate senior staff. The caretaker will also be responsible for using an online facilities management system to log maintenance tasks, schedule inspections, and report issues.

Key Responsibilities:

Premises Maintenance & Security

1. Carry out minor repairs, maintenance, and decoration as required.
2. Ensure the school grounds are tidy, safe, secure and presentable.
3. Open and close the school buildings at designated times, including setting alarms and locking doors.
4. Monitor and maintain heating, lighting, fire safety and plumbing systems.
5. Conduct regular health and safety checks, including fire alarms and emergency lighting.
6. Operate and respond to alarm systems where appropriate
7. Liaise with police where necessary
8. Provide emergency access to the school site

Cleaning & Waste Management

9. Supervise cleaning staff and ensure cleaning standards are met.
10. Perform cleaning duties
11. Manage waste disposal, including recycling and safe disposal of hazardous materials.
12. Refill & replace consumables such as soap & towels

Health & Safety

13. Ensure compliance with health and safety policies at all times
14. Maintain records of risk assessments and inspections.
15. Respond to emergencies, including spillages, accidents, or urgent repairs.

IT & System Use

16. Use the school’s online facilities management system (e.g., Every, iAM Compliant, or similar) to:

o Log and track maintenance requests.

o Schedule statutory checks and routine maintenance.

o Report and escalate issues as necessary.

17. Use email and other communication tools to liaise with contractors, suppliers, and staff.
18. Maintain basic digital records (e.g., stock levels, maintenance logs).

Post holders are expected to undertake other duties and responsibilities relevant to the nature, level & scope of the post and grade. The duties highlighted may vary over time.

Person Specification:

Essential:

19. Previous experience in a caretaking, maintenance, or similar role.
20. Basic computer literacy, including email, internet use, and online systems.
21. Ability to use or learn an online facilities or premises management platform.
22. Good knowledge of general maintenance tasks (DIY, plumbing, minor electrical).
23. Awareness of health and safety requirements.
24. Physically fit and able to carry out manual tasks.
25. Be able to work as part of a team
26. Good communication skills and ability to relate to and work with contractors, colleagues, school visitors and pupils
27. Willingness to gain knowledge of basic plumbing & minor repairs, health & safety legislation & procedures and COSHH regulations. Willingness to undertake any necessary training and periodically travel to other school sites for in-person training.

Desirable:

28. Experience working in a school or educational setting.
29. First Aid and/or Health & Safety qualifications.
30. Familiarity with compliance in educational environments (e.g., fire safety, legionella testing).

32. Able to work independently and manage time effectively.
33. Flexible and willing to respond to the needs of the school.
34. Good communication and interpersonal skills, to liaise with contractors, colleagues, school visitors and pupils.
