Brief Description
You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. As a technician you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our technicians come from various backgrounds and we focus on transferable skills and behaviours. Training is provided to enable you to work safely and competently on the network. With a rewarding career, you may progress to leadership roles.
Note: This role may require on‑call work if you opt for the standard maintenance contract.
About The Role (External)
Your main responsibility is to maintain, inspect and repair land alongside the track network, including vegetation management, drainage and ancillary structures.
You will work outdoors in all conditions, day or night. Tasks may involve manual work, transporting kit across tricky terrain and working near moving trains.
You are a natural team player, sometimes leading the team when asked, ensuring safety standards and competencies.
Technicians may progress to team leadership. Continuous learning and training are provided.
Your Skills Matter
* Leadership – able to lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
* Effective communicator – strong communication skills and ability to give clear instructions.
* Technical skills – knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the discipline you apply for.
* Safety – consistent role‑modelling of safe behaviours, arranging and implementing safe systems of work, and confidently challenging unsafe situations.
* Problem solver – persistent in finding safe and effective solutions, keeping skills up to date with new standards.
* Willingness to learn – continuously developing skills and competencies relevant to your discipline.
* Relevant qualification – ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline, or equivalent experience.
Additional Information
* Shifts – changing shift pattern including days, nights and weekends.
* Outdoor work – comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Safe working – employment subject to drug and alcohol testing and medical assessment, including hearing and eyesight examination.
* Driving – a category B licence is required to drive Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute – must be within a 60‑minute commute of the location.
