Southampton
NHS
Posted: 14 September
Offer description

Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is offering a fixed term contract role commencing February 2026. This full‑time position provides the opportunity to develop skills in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and cardiac intensive care within a large, well‑established training environment.

The service is consultant led, 24 hours a day, and the cardiac intensive care unit is a 16‑bed unit with full cardiac support facilities. Exposure to ventricular assist devices and ECMO is limited (approximately 5–10 adult cardiac ECMO cases per year). UHS has a strong, competency‑based training programme and offers full training in transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE). The department supports teaching, quality improvement and research activities and operates within one of the busiest UK cardiothoracic centres.

Responsibilities

* Work in a multidisciplinary team in the cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care department to care for patients undergoing cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and cardiology procedures in a high‑volume centre.
* Gain experience with consultant support in multiple theatres and cardiology labs, including hybrid procedures and complex electrophysiology, with exposure to congenital heart disease where appropriate.
* Undertake a competency‑based fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care within a well‑established training programme.
* Participate in consultant‑led weekly teaching in cardiac anaesthesia, ITU and TOE with training available toward TOE accreditation.

Experience / Skills Needed

* 3 years wide general anaesthesia or ITU experience
* Clear interest in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and ITU; prior cardiothoracic anaesthesia/ITU experience desirable
* Full‑time position with out‑of‑hours shifts to cover the cardiac ITU
* GMC registration

Additional Information

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms for Trust appointed (non‑training fellow doctors and dentists). A named educational supervisor will be assigned at the start, with a framework supporting Continued Professional Development (CPD) and study leave. GMC revalidation requirements and annual appraisal are part of the role. Salary and progression are linked to the National Medical and Dental pay circular, with basic salaries of £65,048 (MT04) or £73,992 (MT05) based on experience.

Interviews will be held on 13/10/2025. This vacancy closes on or before 23/09/2025. UK skilled worker sponsorship considerations apply where relevant. Applicants must have current UK professional registration with a licence to practise.

Living and Working

Southampton offers a coastal living environment with good transport links to London, access to national parks and a relatively lower cost of living. The trust is one of the largest acute teaching trusts in England with strong staff engagement and opportunities for development.
