As a Transport Manager you will be responsible for ensuring all transport operations comply with legal requirements, O‑Licence undertakings, and Traffic Commissioner guidance, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of company vehicles and drivers. The Transport Manager is the statutory and professionally competent person named on the organisation’s Operator’s Licence (O‑Licence).
Responsibilities of a Transport Manager will include:
* Ensure full compliance with all O‑Licence undertakings and maintain the repute and professional competence required by the Traffic Commissioner.
* Keep up to date with changes to transport legislation, including DVSA guidance, Drivers’ Hours Regulations, Working Time Directive, vehicle weights and dimensions, and road safety requirements.
* Prepare for and manage DVSA inspections, audits, and any investigations by enforcement agencies.
* Ensure immediate response to any reported defects, accidents, or breakdowns.
* Manage driver files, including digital tachograph cards, training records, DVLA licence checks, medicals, and compliance documentation.
* Oversee scheduling, routing, and allocation of vehicles in line with service requirements and regulatory restrictions.
* Ensure that all transport‑related policies and processes are followed across the organisation.
* Provide reports and KPIs to senior leadership, highlighting compliance, performance, incidents, and risks.
* Fleet compliance & management for the 3.5t, 7.5t and Courtesy Car fleet, this includes repair and maintenance bookings (including downtime management)
* Driver compliance, infringements and training management
* Operator’s licence management (Vols management and all requirements under Operator licence requirements)
* Support the planning and logistics team with the day‑to‑day logistics operation
Skills and experience required as a Transport Manager:
* Previous experience in a similar role
* Must hold a valid Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) for Road Haulage
* Must meet the statutory “good repute” requirement for a Transport Manager
* Listed or eligible to be listed as Named Transport Manager on the organisation’s O‑Licence.
* Strong knowledge of transport legislation, DVSA standards, and O‑Licence obligations.
* Experience managing fleet operations, compliance systems, and driver management.
* Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail.
* Effective communication and leadership capabilities.
* Ability to analyse data, produce reports, and implement corrective actions.
* Knowledge of digital fleet systems (e.g., telematics, tachograph analysis software) is desiderable but not essential
* IOSH/NEBOSH or equivalent safety qualification is desiderable but not essential
* Accident investigation or risk management experience is desiderable but not essential
