Why this role?

Our electrical and power systems engineers specialise in highly regulated, safety‑critical and technically complex environments. With a proven track record in designing and examining power systems for some of the UK's most challenging nuclear and high‑hazard facilities, we deliver engineering that is safe, compliant and built on robust technical standards.

As a Power Systems & Protection Engineer, you'll work in a multi‑disciplinary environment supporting high‑integrity electrical infrastructure projects. From system modelling and protection coordination to arc flash studies and fault analysis, you'll play a critical role in ensuring the resilience and safety of essential power networks.

We're looking for a Senior or Principal Engineer with robust expertise in power systems, protection, and electrical safety — someone who can deliver high‑quality analysis, guide multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to developing engineering standards across our organisation.

We also pride ourselves on promoting a healthy work–life balance, with a supportive team culture and opportunities for professional growth, technical development and community engagement.

About You

You are an experienced Electrical Engineer with a strong background in power systems analysis, protection engineering and electrical safety, ideally in nuclear or other highly regulated sectors. You bring technical depth, analytical precision and the ability to develop safe and resilient solutions for complex electrical networks.

You'll join a collaborative and technically focused team where quality, safety and continuous improvement are central. You will work closely with engineers across disciplines, contribute to engineering standards, and support both project delivery and long‑term asset improvements.

Your confident communication skills and stakeholder awareness ensure you can work effectively with clients, project teams and end‑users — especially in environments involving aging assets, operational constraints and strict safety rules.

Key Purpose

* Develop robust electrical power system models using ETAP and related tools.
* Design and specify protection systems and protection coordination studies.
* Produce fault level calculations, arc flash assessments and protection reports.
* Apply relevant electrical safety rules and standards — especially those associated with the Sellafield Distribution Network.
* Support continuous improvement of engineering best practice, standards and guidance.
* Provide specialist input into multidisciplinary project delivery.

Responsibilities

* Create, maintain and update project electrical power system models.
* Deliver fault studies, protection coordination and arc flash analyses.
* Undertake unit protection calculations including differential and high‑impedance schemes.
* Provide power systems engineering support to the wider project team.
* Ensure designs address operational constraints, electrical safety requirements and aging asset obtacles.
* Contribute to development and review of engineering documentation and standards, including Sellafield‑related guidance.
* Support technical reviews, design assurance and engineering governance activities.
* Liaise with internal teams, clients and other stakeholders to ensure safe and compliant solutions.

Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

* Working knowledge of BS EN 60909 fault calculations.
* Experience using ETAP or equivalent power system modelling software.
* Strong background in protection and control systems at 11kV and 400V.
* Experience designing 11kV and 400V substations.
* Proficiency in unit protection calculations (differential, high‑impedance).
* Experience working with electrical infrastructure upgrades and aging assets.
* Understanding of the Sellafield Distribution Network and its electrical safety practices.

Desirable

* Experience working within Sellafield design processes.
* Familiarity with tools such as Trimble, ERACS, PowerFactory.
* Knowledge of IEC 61850 and power system SCADA.
* Chartered Engineer status (or working toward it).
* Experience conducting Arc Flash Risk Assessments (IEEE 1584).

Many of the positions within our company are subject to security clearance. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by various factors. The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain security clearance for this role as required by our clients and sectors.
