Description UL Solutions is searching for a Laboratory Technician for the EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) team in Basingstoke. This is an entry-level/early career position, ideally suited to someone who has gained in the region of 12 months experience of testing in a similar environment. Ideally, this would be experience of EMC testing, but we'd also like to hear from candidates who have gained experience in testing Radio (RF) products, cellular, medical devices or other safety-related product testing. You will be responsible for supporting and carrying out testing and certification of the latest consumer technology, to ensure compliance with relevant EMC standards. Responsibilities Responsible for the setup and performance of equipment and test setups for clients. Builds and/or adapts setup and test equipment for performance of tests. Examines test samples and reads blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, measuring instruments, and operational instructions. Follows basically defined test plans and datasheets. Evaluates test performance and sample operation to properly evaluate test results. Records and explains test results and completes test report. Builds and/or adapts setup and test equipment to new situations, based on data sheets and instructions from engineering department personnel Examines less complex customer samples and learns to operate appropriate tests for each case with necessary supervision/support. Communicates with customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation. Operates designated machines and special laboratory equipment. Performs routine maintenance of designated test equipment and laboratory area. May perform basic calibration of test equipment. Reads and understands specific test standards and testing technology for scope of responsibility with necessary supervision/support. Qualifications Applicants are required to have approximately 12 months’ hands-on testing experience (ideally EMC testing) combined with an engineering/science-based qualification. A genuine interest in technology is central and although not a requirement, an understanding of IT type equipment, radio technologies, such as cellular, WLAN and Bluetooth and testing equipment, including spectrum analysers and signal generators is highly desirable. The role will also include the generation/creation of technical reports, therefore good verbal and written communication skills and an attention to detail are essential. 12 months experience of EMC safety product testing, e.g. radio, wireless comms, medical devices etc A university degree or vocational qualifications in engineering (e.g. aeronautics) science or electronics would be desirable Knowledge and experience of laboratory test concepts and reporting would be ideal Exposure to relevant national and international regulatory requirements and standards Be able to work independently and as part of a team It is important that the individual can work to deadlines, to meet customer requirements Total Rewards We understand that rewards are an important consideration as you plan the next step in your career.
