About the Role
We are seeking an experienced tax and VAT professional to join our Group Finance Function as the Indirect Tax Manager. The main responsibility of the role is to oversee OUP VAT compliance and regulatory obligations, as well as providing limited technical VAT guidance to internal stakeholders.
OUP sells to customers in more than 170 countries and is registered for VAT/GST in more than 40 countries. The role covers 3 key areas – Compliance, Advisory and Business Partnering, as well as some ad-hoc Projects.
Key responsibilities in this role will include:
1. Reviewing OUP UK’s 40+ global VAT returns and signing off in conjunction with the Senior Group VAT Manager.
2. Ensure balance sheet management of indirect taxes in conjunction with finance teams.
3. Approving Intrastat and ECSLs where applicable.
4. Partnering with finance functions to ensure payments of returns are made in a timely manor.
5. Overview and sign off OUP Global office VAT returns where local finance staff are not in place to do so.
6. Manage VAT/indirect tax risks for OUP’s global business.
7. Manage responses to global tax authority queries and audits.
8. Identifying issues and opportunities to continuously improve data and the VAT
9. compliance processes
10. Provide clear, accurate and timely advice regarding internal VAT queries.
11. Advise the Senior Group VAT Manager on VAT due diligence and the integration of any acquired businesses to reduce risk.
12. Monitor and understand the impact of external legislative changes, engaging advisors were necessary.
13. Engaging with OUP divisions to understand future requirements of the business.
14. Aligning with the University tax team on any legislative changes.
15. Working with tax technical team on country specific requirements and global projects (e.g. e-invoicing)
16. Working with tax technical team to ensure that ERP systems and VAT/GST reporting is accurate.
17. Working with tax technical team to ensure that global tax engine - OneSource – is up to date and updated for any legislative or rate-changes.
18. The tax team are no longer "back-office," but actively influence strategic decisions.
19. Monitor and understand the impact of business changes, new products/services, and routes to market by engaging with senior business leaders and stakeholders.
20. Become an active participant in tax and finance projects (e.g. print-on-demand, geo-blocking)
We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have/be:
21. Relevant experience in indirect tax compliance in a complex, global business, either in industry or practice
22. Relevant qualifications, such as CTA, ACCA or ACA
23. An understanding of VAT legislation
24. Strong communication skills
