Your Role

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a skilled team working on real-world projects, including the Royal Navy’s Type 31 frigates and the maintenance of Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. You’ll specialise in either Power Engineering or Control and Instrumentation, supporting commissioning and performance testing activities across electrical and control systems.

Day-to-day, you’ll be involved in a wide variety of work – from troubleshooting faults and analysing data to integrating systems and contributing to test schedules. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you’ll learn how to apply commissioning procedures safely and effectively while developing key engineering behaviours like adaptability, attention to detail and professionalism.

This apprenticeship will allow you to build your knowledge of marine engineering fundamentals, health and safety practices, and industry standards. You’ll also gain experience with technical tools and software while collaborating with expert engineers who are passionate about your development.

Your education/training

As part of your apprenticeship, you will study for the BEng (Hons) Engineering (Design and Manufacture) through Glasgow Caledonian University.

You’ll attend university through blended learning, typically 1–2 days per week during term time. Over the four years, you’ll follow a specialist stream in either Control and Instrumentation or Electrical Power Engineering Design, aligned with your role and career goals.

The course is co-designed with industry and accredited by the IET, IMechE and InstMC, giving you a strong foundation for professional recognition.

Future prospects

By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the skills needed to step into a Commissioning Engineer role at Babcock, with a competitive starting salary of over £45,.

You’ll also have the opportunity to build on your progress toward professional registration as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer, a recognised benchmark of engineering competence, which can support your journey into more advanced roles, such as Senior Engineer.

As a global organisation, Babcock provides countless opportunities to enhance your skills and advance your career. To support your growth, we’ve introduced the Babcock Role Framework, which outlines roles, career pathways, and development opportunities. With every job mapped to these frameworks, you’ll have a transparent view of the steps needed to reach Senior Engineer and beyond.

What you’ll need

1. UCAS Tariff: 96 points.
2. Scottish Highers: BBCC or equivalent, including Maths and a science or technology subject.
3. We also accept:
