Consultant Haematopathologist

Consultant Haematopathologist (One WTE post for 11PAs) for the Haemato-oncology Diagnostic Service (HODS)

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and forward thinking Histopathologist, with specialist expertise/interest in Haematopathology, ideally early to mid-career, to join our team of consultants with potential opportunities for management roles within the team, research and teaching. The posts would suit either a first-time consultant or an early-stage consultant Histopathologist wishing to relocate.

You will have a strong background or interest (in case of a first-time consultant) in Haematopathology and be a team player, who is able to work seamlessly together with colleagues in a collegiate and considerate manner, enabling a productive service. Ideally, the candidate should be within five years of histopathology training completion (CCT) in the UK or equivalent outside the UK.

Candidates will be expected to have relevant expertise in Haematopathology or be willing to specialise in this area.

The Haemato-oncology Diagnostic Service for the Merseyside & Cheshire Cancer Network (MCCN) is the only NICE IOG 2016 (NG 47) peer review compliant service in the NW of England and is a state-of art dynamic facility with a national profile.


Main duties of the job

The service carries out primary reporting of haematological malignancies in line with NICE-IOG 2016 guidance as well as the WHO Classification, including all modalities of testing on liquid and solid samples. The unit is also involved in innovation and research both internally and external (including industrial) partners.

Job duties

This is a dynamic service and is at the cutting edge of science in the specialty. You will be supported by a well-established, experienced, collegiate and friendly specialist reporting team. For a first-time consultant, support to develop skills in specialist haematopathology will be provided by the team for a period of 12-18 months.

The appointees, in collaboration with the other Consultants will be expected to fulfil the duties detailed in Job description which can be found in our job pack, attached in the supporting documents. The ability to work as part of a team in a collegiate manner is a key requirement.

We advocate lean principles and have a successful and efficientsystem of working including a degree of flexible working within the limitations of the service.

Job responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive Hematopathology diagnostic service, including full clinical liaison, to:

Clinicians in the Cheshire & Merseyside Cancer Network

Carry out multi-disciplinary team meetings (MDT)

Address any day-to-day clinical queries, in conjunction with colleagues

Work seamlessly between different areas of the unit, such as, Immunophenotyping, Haematopathology and Molecular Genetics

To take a lead role in management in dedicated areas within the team.

To develop innovative ways of working to meet the increasing demands of clinical users.

To be involved in the training of Specialty Trainees, scientific and BMS staff.

To work to the team rota and give reciprocal cover for periods of leave between team members.

To work with the Clinical Director on all matters where requested to do so.

To take part in Medical Audit and Quality Control.

To pursue a programme of Continuous Professional and Medical Education/ Development (CME/CPD) with the Royal College of Pathologists and to participate in annual Individual Performance Reviews (IPR) and Consultant appraisals.

To contribute to the requirements of Clinical Governance.

To share in the day-to-day administrative duties associated with the running of a clinical laboratory.

Person Specification


Qualifications and training

* FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification
* Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
* Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
* Higher Degree/Fellowship in Haematopathology
* Higher Management or Leadership diploma/degree


Experience

* Evidence of fluency in Diagnostic Haematopathology including complex cases
* Evidence of special expertise or interest in molecular diagnosis as well as in reporting flow cytometry and aspirate morphology


Skills and knowledge

* Evidence of ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Evidence of verbal and written communication skills
* Evidence of ability to teach junior staff and undergraduate students as well as Fellows
* Evidence of involvement in clinical audit
* Evidence of IT skills
* Evidence of research and publications
* Evidence of commitment to work to create HODS as a national centre of excellence
