Overview

The Centre for Health Economics & Medicines Evaluation (CHEME) have an established reputation of over twenty years of research and teaching health economics and pharmacoeconomics. Our key research themes are public health economics and the economics of prevention across the life course; and pharmaceutical economics, policy, prescribing and medicines use.

At CHEME we undertake collaborative methodological and applied research to inform practice and policy, by supporting effective and equitable decision-making and resource allocation. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework indicated that 95% of our research is internationally excellent or world leading.

The Centre is active across a range of health economic and medicines evaluation research activities. These are broadly categorised into the following research themes:

• Public Health and Prevention Economics Research, led by Professor Rhiannon Tudor Edwards.

• Pharmacoeconomics, pharmaceutical policy and medicines use, led by Professor Dyfrig Hughes.

CHEME is a core part of the Bangor Institute of Health and Medical Research (BIHMR).

Purpose of the Job

The post is part of an established team working in health economics. The role involves working within a dynamic research team, contributing to and conducting research, and gathering, preparing and analysing data to generate results that will be disseminated in multiple ways.

They will also be responsible, among other things, for helping to implement and coordinate a series of meetings, focus and stakeholder groups, consulting with external and internal partners, along with some elements of project management. The post holder will also help with the Centre’s communication and social media engagement.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Get to know and work collaboratively with all members of the team and external partners.

• Pro-actively contribute to and conduct research, from gathering and interpreting data to presenting results.

• Prepare reports, papers and communications pieces, and identify new ways of communicating research outputs.

• Provide writing support, including but not limited to: grant capture, proofreading of abstracts and article drafts, press releases.

• Ensure the information on the Centre’s web page is current and accurate and support production of the bi-annual newsletter.

• Undertake other appropriate duties and responsibilities as may be required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

• The post holder will be expected to comply with the University’s equality policies and statements, Dignity at Work and Study Policy and the University’s Welsh Language Scheme.

• The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for him/her self and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by his/her actions or inactions. The post holder is also required to comply with all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.

• The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their posts.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential :

• PhD in related field

Desirable :

• Teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent) or relevant experience

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

• Proven experience of working in Higher Education or a relevant context.

• Proven experience of working in alignment with Bangor University or Wales-wide legislation, policies and strategies.

• Demonstrable working knowledge of research or grant capture requirements relevant for a Centre such as CHEME.

• Experience of conducting, disseminating and evaluating own and/or others’ research.

• Experience of working on time-limited projects and ensuring successful outcomes.

Desirable :

• Experience of working within a health or health economics context.

• Experience of working with business, industry or government.

• Experience of administrative work within a busy office environment and of developing and implementing administrative procedures and systems.

Skills/Abilities

Essential :

• Excellent IT skills and proficient in the MS Office suite.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of staff and partners across all levels.

• Excellent writing skills and eye for detail ensuring readability for various target audiences.

• Proven ability to work under pressure in a demanding environment, monitoring and prioritising work in an organised, effective and efficient manner and meet deadlines.

• Ability to work effectively both as a member of a team and one’s own initiative, liaising effectively with colleagues as appropriate.

• Experience in handling confidential information and an understanding of the relevant legislation in relation to data handling and compliance.

• Commitment to personal, professional and service development.

Desirable :

• Demonstrate proven project management skills.

• Evidence of conducting research surveys, interviews, and being involved in data analysis with the ability to actively engage in and contribute to writing research publications and reports.

• Experience of producing promotional materials and promoting on social media.

• Ability to update and develop web pages.

• The ability to speak and write Welsh fluently in a wide variety of situations is desirable for this post.
