JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Nursery Assistant
REPORTS TO: The Principal through the class teacher
JOB PURPOSE: Under the direction of the class teacher, assist with the educational support and care of the children in a designated class, in or outside the classroom.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Collaborate with the teacher to promote the efficient running of the class.
* Maintain confidentiality regarding home/child/teacher relationships.
* Build supportive relationships with children and parents.
* Assist children in learning effectively indoors and outdoors by clarifying instruction, ensuring children can use equipment and materials, motivating and encouraging children, and supporting identified areas for development.
* Plan, implement and review curriculum areas under the teacher’s direction.
* Prepare learning materials and resources.
* Display children’s work and record progress.
* Set up, clear away and regularly clean equipment.
* Participate in classroom activities, including groups of children or individual children, under the teacher’s direction.
* Participate in special events and activities such as school visits.
* Promote positive behaviour in accordance with school policy.
* Ensure a safe environment for children.
* Assist with toileting, personal hygiene and dressing of children.
* Administer routine prescribed medicines and drugs and deal with minor cuts and bruises.
* Report to the Child Protection Officer any signs or symptoms requiring expert or immediate attention.
* Plan, purchase and prepare daily snacks in line with the Healthy Eating Policy.
* Assist with classroom administration such as collecting dinner money and lost property.
* Provide regular feedback to the teacher about children.
* Attend relevant in‑service training and disseminate information to colleagues.
* Participate in regular staff meetings and staff training days as required.
* Contribute to the implementation and review of school policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
* Minimum Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification in a relevant area from a recognised accredited awarding body.
* Minimum 6 weeks experience in a formal learning environment or a placement completed as part of the Level 2 qualification.
* OR minimum 12 months experience of working in a formal learning environment.
* Working knowledge of health and safety requirements, development needs of children and child protection and safeguarding.
