Stranraer
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Senior Harbour Assistant to be an integral part of the Harbours Team, supporting harbour users at Stranraer, Port William, Isle of Whithorn, and Garlieston Harbours.
The main responsibilities of the role are:
1. Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the harbours and equipment in compliance with relevant legislation.
2. Supervise minor maintenance works within the harbours and navigable channels.
3. Assist with the administration of berth management, bookings, and payment collection.
4. Manage and supervise the craning and movement of vessels between water and shore storage areas.
Suitable candidates will need to be able to work as part of a team and have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Outlook, Excel, and Word. Training support will be provided for computer use.
Experience in boat handling is essential, while knowledge of harbour and marina operations, including the Port Marine Safety Code, is desirable. If not already held, obtaining a commercially endorsed boat handling certificate and a crane operator's certificate will be supported but are essential for retention of the position.
A developmental opportunity to obtain a Harbour Masters Diploma and potential for future promotion will also be provided.
Good communication skills are necessary to engage with members of the public, commercial operators, boat owners, and staff to ensure accurate activity records, billing, infrastructure, and defect reports. Liaison with contractors will also be required. A driving licence is necessary for the use of council vehicles during site visits.
The work is occasionally tide-dependent and may require working outside of normal office hours.
This post is subject to candidate vetting through Disclosure Scotland.
Candidates should be prepared to work in poor weather conditions. Full PPE will be provided.
