Duties and responsibilities:
As the Specialist BMS for Blood Sciences / Biochemistry you will also have responsibility for the MLA pool, ensuring the MLAs are rotated into each section as required and that there is adequate MLA staffing in each section. You will also to support the MLA training and competencies ensuring they have the required skills to perform the MLA role across the whole department.
To assist in the organisation, management and development of services within a specialised area of the pathology service, or across a range of services provided by the laboratory at Hub Hospital and support the provision of pathology services for spoke site Hospitals
To liaise with the Laboratory Consultant and the Pathology Manager, to ensure the provision of the high-quality service in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Take a lead role in ensuring the hospital Point of Care Services (POCT) are safe and liaise with the National Pathology Specialist – Point of Care Testing.
1. Develop practice including investigation and reporting, within your areas of specialist expertise.
2. Analyse, interpret and report information and knowledge related to ideas and concepts.
3. Develop and evaluate the movement of laboratory specimens and blood.
4. Assist with research and development.
5. Develop practice in the application of technology for measuring and monitoring pathology investigations, within your specialist area of expertise..
6. Provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information.
7. Develop own knowledge and skills and that of others.
8. Promotes best practice in health and safety and security.
9. Assist in maintaining and developing services.
10. Deliver quality improvement with the department senior team.
11. Support and enable equality, diversity and rights.
12. Acknowledge the risk of Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI) and understand own responsibility as agreed with line manager in the prevention and control of HCAI.
13. Ensure distribution of External Quality Control (EQA) and Internal Quality Control (IQC) for POCT services to the correct departments in all supported hospitals
14. Ensure uplift of EQA results for POCT to web portals and report results into the local POCT committee and give assistance to resolve any issues
15. Attend local POCT committees and contribute to discussions on equipment, maintenance, EQA and IQC
Who we're looking for:
Qualifications and Training:
16. Degree qualified, HNC Medical Laboratory Sciences or equivalent which would allow individual to be eligible for Associate Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences.
17. Biomedical Scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council
Experience:
18. Experience within blood sciences / biochemistry
19. Working within a performance driven culture while maintaining safe standards.
20. Meeting financial and budgetary targets.
21. Supporting the commercial development of pathology services locally
22. Experience in a scientific laboratory.
23. Experience of independent sector
24. Strategically commercial and familiarity with service developments.
25. Experience of working in partnership with consultants and participating in creating innovative solution for new pathology services.
26. Challenging consultants to influence evidence based practice
27. Auditor
Knowledge and Technical Ability:
28. Shares evidence based practices with colleagues to enhance pathology service and standards
29. Possess the mandatory training requirements for role including infection control and health and safety competencies.
