Hours
Monday to Friday, 30 hours per week – flexible rota to ensure full coverage.
About the role
Royal Voluntary Service hospital cafés, shops and trolleys are a vital part of the NHS. Your role will lead a passionate team of staff and volunteers, delivering outstanding customer service and maintaining the highest standards of retail and café operations.
What you’ll bring
 * Excellent communication skills with the ability to connect with a diverse range of customers.
 * Strong leadership and people‑management skills, proven through at least two years of experience in a retail or café environment.
 * Cash handling experience and knowledge of EPOS/till systems.
 * Understanding of food safety and health & safety procedures.
 * Proficiency in Microsoft Office and email at a basic level.
 * Ability to keep a calm, professional presence in a fast‑paced environment.
 * Organised, prioritising, and delegating skills with a drive for continuous improvement.
 * Willingness to attend additional training and undertake professional development.
Job requirements
 * At least two years of management experience, preferably in a retail or café setting.
 * Cash handling experience and experience working with volunteers.
 * Knowledge of food safety and health & safety, EPOS/till systems and general administration.
 * Strong communication and organisational abilities.
 * Flexibility to attend out‑of‑hours training if required.
 * Good literacy and numeracy skills.
Job responsibilities
 * Oversee all aspects of the store’s operations, including stock control, staffing, and day‑to‑day functioning.
 * Meet or exceed the agreed profit and loss (P&L) budget and monitor performance regularly.
 * Maintain a safe, clean, and organised environment, providing friendly and efficient customer service.
 * Ensure compliance with statutory standards – Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, Data Protection, and Financial controls.
 * Lead by example to create a positive volunteer experience, motivating both volunteers and employees.
 * Co‑ordinate recruitment and training of volunteers and staff, providing coaching and mentoring.
 * Use management reports to monitor performance and identify improvement opportunities.
 * Collaborate with the Area Manager to develop and implement the local Retail Business Plan.
 * Maintain effective working relationships with the local NHS team.
 * Provide regular performance updates to the Area Manager.
 * Work flexible hours aligned with store trading hours.
