About The Role The Assistant Project Manager Higher Apprentice role at National Grid sits within our Infrastructure Delivery (ID) team, which leads the execution of major energy projects across the UK. These projects include building and upgrading substations and transmission lines which are critical components that ensure electricity and gas are delivered safely and reliably. By working closely with internal teams and external partners, you’ll help drive the UK’s energy transition, making the grid more resilient and ready for clean, low-carbon power. One of our key initiatives is the Great Grid Upgrade, which connects more renewable energy to homes and businesses across England and Wales. As an Assistant Project Manager Higher Apprentice, you’ll play a vital role in shaping the future of energy, gaining hands-on experience while contributing to National Grid’s sustainability goals. Role Within this role, you’ll gain experience in every stage of the project lifecycle, from early planning and stakeholder engagement to construction and final commissioning, including: Support Project Planning & Coordination: Assist in organising project activities, schedules, and resources to help ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. Maintain Documentation & Communication: Keep accurate project records and facilitate clear communication between internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders. Monitor Progress & Identify Risks: Track project milestones, flag potential delays or issues, and support risk management by helping develop mitigation strategies. Assist with Budget & Reporting: Help monitor project spending, prepare financial reports, and ensure budget compliance throughout the project lifecycle. Conduct Site Visits & Quality Checks: Participate in site inspections to review construction progress, ensure safety and quality standards are met, and engage with local stakeholders to gather feedback. Location This role is based in the Warwick office and offers flexible, hybrid working. You will be required to travel to our site locations which will include spending nights regularly away from home. Annually you’re expected to travel more than 10,000 miles for business across our regions (depending on where you are based) in England and Wales (North / Central / London & South). As part of your programme, you’ll also be required to attend our National Grid Training Centre based at Eakring, Newark. Due to the extensive amount of travel and site presence needed in this role, you’ll be eligible for a role requirement company car (no cash alternative). About You You will need to have: You will have a minimum of five GCSEs with grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including English language and Maths. Have or be predicted to achieve two A-Levels at grade C or above one of which must be in either Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Computing OR BTEC National Certificate OR Diploma Level 3 in either Electrical, Mechanical, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Computing or Business discipline at Grade Merit or Distinction. You must already have a full valid UK driving license in place at the point you make your application. You will be flexible to travel when required within this role, this will include frequent overnight stays away from home in pre-booked accommodation. You do not need prior work experience; the determination and will to succeed is far more important as we will teach you everything you need to know. The role will provide you with a variety of skills including transferrable skills to support your career development within National Grid.
