A Vacancy at Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust.
We have an exciting and innovative opportunity for a Band 5 Pharmacy Technician with an interest in supporting medicines optimisations within community hospitals, mental health, domiciliary visits and virtual wards. You will join our existing team of Pharmacists and Pharmacy technicians who provide pharmacy services to patients across Dorset in care settings or their own homes. This post will cover the Weymouth & Portland, Jurassic and Mid Dorset area. Applications from Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians due to qualify in February 2026 will also be considered.
Responsibilities
* Lead improvements to maximise safe, cost effective best practice in prescribing to improve the quality of patient care.
* Help patients to get the best from their medicines by providing medicines optimisation in community hospitals or domiciliary settings.
* Become part of the virtual ward MDT Team to provide patients with hospital level care in their own homes.
* Enrol on the Pharmacy Medicines Optimisation Training programme if required; opportunities to undertake ACT may be available.
* Undertake patient facing and patient supporting roles.
* Undertake medicines optimisation in community hospitals, virtual ward and domiciliary settings.
* Support medication reviews and medicines reconciliation.
* Provide specialist expertise, where competent.
* Support initiatives for antimicrobial stewardship.
* Work with the virtual ward MDT to ensure efficient medicines optimisation.
* Provide training and support on the legal, safe and secure handling of medicines.
* Develop relationships and work with practice teams and community pharmacies.
* Support the implementation of national prescribing policies and guidance.
* Undertake clinical audits, support quality improvement measures and contribute to the Quality and Outcomes Framework and enhanced services.
* Assist in the delivery of medicines optimisation incentive schemes and patient safety audits.
* Provide leadership for medicines management systems across all services.
Qualifications and requirements
* Pharmacy Technician level role (Band 5).
* Experience in medicines optimisation and working with multidisciplinary teams is desirable.
* May apply to Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians due to qualify in February 2026.
* Desirable willingness to enrol on related training programmes and development opportunities referenced in the role.
* Employer requires Enhanced DBS check; note DBS process details may apply and supporting DBS checks are covered by the Trust.
