Healthcare Science Practitioner

An opportunity has arisen to join a small, friendly and dedicated team within the Clinical Measurement Department at University Hospitals Dorset. The department is open from 8am until 5pm; Monday to Friday however weekend working may be required in the future. Staff will be required to work flexibly between these hours.

The healthcare science practitioner post is a 3 year fixed term role. The post holder will assist with the provision of routine Clinical Measurement Services which includes a range of diagnostic assessments. Many of the assessments sit within the field of gastroenterology, colorectal and pelvic floor.

The post holder will work under the direction of the Clinical Measurement team. We will provide you with training across all clinical areas and there may be an opportunity for the post holder to undertake additional training in the form of a level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science (subject to interest and suitability). The apprentice will undertake practical training whilst working with a team of practitioners, and clinical scientists providing the diagnostics and at the University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will support and assist the team with performance of diagnostic tests and assessments. They will conduct their routine and non-routine activities under the overall guidance of senior staff. Training will be provided. There will be some administrative duties associated with the role, such as maintaining records of patient attendance, preparation of patient packs, liaising with ward staff and porters and arranging in-patient transport to and from the Department.

The post holder will set-up the clinical room/s and equipment for clinical measurement investigations as required prior to the investigation, and clear the room and equipment following investigations, as required.

The post-holder will follow department policies and SOP's and will report to the Head of Clinical Measurement at regular intervals, to ensure the appropriate maintenance and development of Clinical Measurement services.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will undertake practical training whilst working with a team of practitioners and clinical scientists providing the diagnostic services at the University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will gain skills and experience by observing, assisting, and performing procedures under direct supervision.

They will communicate effectively within the healthcare environment and clinical team, adapting communication to meet varying needs and overcoming barriers to understanding. They will apply academic learning and develop patient-centred skills.

The nature of the work will be a mixture of routine and non-routine clinical work. The work will require an understanding of a range of healthcare science clinical activities. This is a physical role requiring the need to perform lifting and handling, patient transfers and will need a high degree of manual dexterity.


Person Specification


Interpersonal skills

* Ability to prioritise and manage own and departmental work
* Ability to deal with distressing circumstances
* Be able to communicate in written and spoken English as necessary for the role
* Good communication and interpersonal skills
* To be competent to deal calmly and professionally with patients, relatives and work colleagues in a confidential and sensitive manner
* Evidence of interest in and / or work experience in a clinical / technical working environment
* Able to demonstrate problem solving and prioritising abilities
* Strong sense of commitment to openness, honesty and integrity in undertaking the role


Education and knowledge

* Level 2 Maths and English at Grade 4 or above
* A level (L3) or equivalent points (>96) preferably in related subject
* Evidence of an interest in and / or work experience in a clinical / patient facing working environment.
* Knowledge of Clinical Measurement procedures / techniques.


Physical skills

* Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods
* High levels of manual dexterity: ability to make accurate measurements.
* Able to lift and transport heavy equipment and to assist with patient transfers.
