About the RoleThe CNC Setter Operator is responsible for the setup, programming, and operation of numerical control (CNC) machines used to cut, shape, and finish metal workpieces in accordance with aerospace and aircraft landing gear component specifications. This position supports Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) activities by ensuring high precision, traceability, and compliance with aviation regulatory and quality standards.Duties and Responsibilities? Set up and operate CNC machines for production by inspecting parts, identifying malfunctions, troubleshooting issues when necessary, and reporting required repairs. Perform basic CNC programming and editing.? Produce high-precision and micro-finish surfaces during turning, facing, and machining of aircraft landing gear components.? Review setup sheets, engineering drawings, and specifications to determine machining sequence, setup procedures, and finished part dimensions. Demonstrate the ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and perform basic shop math.? Install fixtures, align and secure workpieces using clamps, bolts, hand tools, and measuring devices such as calipers and gauges in accordance with setup instructions.? Load control programs or enter machine commands to retrieve preprogrammed instructions from the system database. Set tool offsets and initiate machining operations.? Monitor machining operations and regulate processes by adjusting machine parameters and controls as required.? Observe machine performance to detect abnormalities such as tool wear, vibration, or equipment malfunction.? Replace cutting tools, adjust tool offsets, and reposition workpieces as required throughout the machining process.? Perform layout, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, and gauges. Report any discrepancies to the supervisor.? Adjust feed rates, speeds, and tooling when necessary to maintain part quality and dimensional accuracy.? Ensure complete and accurate documentation and traceability of all work performed in accordance with aerospace and regulatory requirements (e.g., EASA and FAA standards where applicable).? Meet production schedules and deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.? Identify and resolve production issues, escalating concerns to the Production Manager or Supervisor when required.? Maintain awareness and understanding of responsibilities outlined in the company's environmental procedures.? Maintain a Practical Experience Record (PER) book.? May be required to train personnel within a specified area, subject to qualifications and experience.? All duties shall be undertaken in compliance with Safety and Environmental Regulations and Company Procedures.Education and Qualifications? Educated to at least GCSE level or equivalent.? Ability to communicate fluently in written and spoken English.Experience and Knowledge? Basic CNC programming knowledge and familiarity with standard CNC controllers, including CNC lathes, engine lathes, and vertical milling machines.? Experience with FANUC controls is preferred.? Strong understanding of machining processes, cutting tools, mechanical principles, and shop mathematics.? Ability to align, secure, and support workpieces independently with minimal supervision.? Aerospace background not essential but would be preferred.Personal Qualities? Team player with proven ability to manage, lead and provide guidance.? The successful candidate will initially work a day shift for training, onboarding, and integration before transitioning to nights.? The position requires flexibility in working hours, including the ability to work overtime and occasional weekend shifts when required.? The role involves manual handling activities and requires a good understanding of safe manual handling practices.? The position involves operating and working around complex CNC and machining equipment.? The ability to maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment in accordance with 5S standards is essential.Additional Requirements? Candidate must have the right to live and work in the UK unrestricted.? Mandatory training will be required.? Physical Requirements: The role requires standing for prolonged periods with scheduled breaks throughout the shift. The position involves lifting heavy aerospace components.
