Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Summer Support and Media Communications Assistant for the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Summer Support and Media Assistant is a hybrid student position that supports summer academic operations, community programming, and communications at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC). This role helps facilitate courses, field experiences, and student events while also creating student-centric digital media and promotional content that highlights experiential learning at the Oregon Coast. In addition, this position contributes to the creation and refinement of Hatfield tour and outreach materials, including key highlights, facts, and student-centered examples that help prospective and visiting audiences better understand the impact and variety of options for coastal learning experiences. The position offers hands-on professional experience in communication, teamwork, project coordination, technology, leadership, and inclusive community engagement.
This position is located at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. Shared field housing at Hatfield Marine Science Center is provided. Communication, Teamwork, Leadership, Technology Position Duties Summer Operations Support (50%) The employee will help support summer academic operations, student programming, and community engagement at HMSC.
Course & Field Support
1. Assist with summer courses, including:
2. Driving, loading, and refueling university-owned 6- or 12-passenger vans for field trips
3. Assisting instructors in the field
4. Setting up labs and classrooms
5. Manage organization, storage, and inventory of shared lab and field equipment and storage areas supporting teaching.
6. Support development and implementation of Guin Library–MACO–Innovation Lab LabShare program to improve access, tracking, and visibility of shared field and lab equipment.
7. Navigate and respond to evolving course and faculty needs by troubleshooting technical and logistical challenges and implementing solutions with professionalism and flexibility, in coordination with a supervisor.
Community Events & Outreach
8. Execute and support summer HMSC community event programming as directed by supervisors.
9. Assist with and/or co-facilitate HMSC events such as orientations, meetings, workshops, and other community programs from setup to breakdown.
10. Support weekly research seminar logistics, including monitoring Zoom for remote participants.
11. Promote, attend, or participate in HMSC campus programming, including weekly research seminars, the Markham Symposium, and professional development sessions.
12. Monitor the HMSC student Discord channel and share information as appropriate with supervisors.
13. Participate in community outreach activities, which may include providing or assisting with campus tours.
14. Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors from diverse backgrounds.
15. Collaborate with Hatfield Housing, RAs, HMSC Operations, faculty, staff, and other partners to support student needs, course operations, and community activities or other shared goals as requested. This may include:
16. Assisting with coordination and facilitation of extracurricular, research internship, student professional development, and student life programing.
Communications, Project Management, and Collaboration (50%)The employee will support storytelling, digital communications, project coordination, and collaborative work across HMSC and MACO.Communications & Media
17. Collaborate and consult with supervisors to identify content goals and priorities, while contributing creative ideas and approaches to tell the story of experiential learning at Hatfield.
18. Review and apply insights from past HMSC/MACO social media and promotional projects to improve and guide the development of new promotional and engagement materials.
19. Document experiential learning through photos, videos, interviews, and written content, exercising judgment to remain respectful and non-intrusive to instruction and student work.
20. Develop plans, prioritize, and manage timelines to collect and create content, meet deadlines, and maintain organized, labeled media files in shared platforms.
21. Collect content via photography, video, and interviews using a smart phone and digital camera.
22. Synthesize collected content (photos, videos, interviews) into print and digital communications materials as requested, including but not limited to social media (Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn) images and captions, short videos, flyers, webpages, etc.
23. Lead and implement a weekly “Summer Hatfield Student Experience” social media series in collaboration with partners.
24. Adhere to OSU branding guidelines and digital accessibility regulations.
25. Mentor as a reliable, knowledgeable peer resource by sharing information about HMSC programs and events and connecting students to available resources.
26. Connect with students, faculty, visitors, and the public to promote HMSC academic initiatives and direct individuals to appropriate resources in a professional and informative manner
27. Develop and update Hatfield tour and outreach materials (highlights, facts, student examples) to support broader HMSC initiatives and admissions efforts.

30. Attend and actively engage in regular check-in meetings with supervisors, providing updates, feedback, and progress reports on assignments

32. Complete all required training and orientation assignments in a timely manner.
33. Maintain organized and accessible files and data in Box and other assigned platforms.

41. Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
42. Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center. Additional Required Qualifications
44. Must be a current OSU student or degree partnership student with OSU at the time of hire and through duration of the position.
45. Have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.50 or higher.
46. Maintain good academic and conduct standing with OSU.
47. Proficiency in Canva, Meta Business Suite, Instagram, Facebook, X, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Zoom, or other similar programs and a willingness to learn new software as needed.
48. Experience in graphic design, such as creating fliers, social media posts and captions, etc.
49. Photography, videography, video editing, and interviewing skills.
50. Experience editing images and videos, including short reel creation.
51. Demonstrate strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
52. Ability to work independently, prioritize projects, and proactively seek guidance from supervisor as needed.
53. Valid Driver’s License and ability to drive 6- and 12-passenger (or willingness to learn).
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
54. Familiarity with Hatfield and MACO’s social media and web presence.
55. Experiences with Adobe Creative Suite, Capcut or other relevant software products essential for digital media creation.
56. Experience or interest in creating compelling social media and/or other digital and print marketing content.
57. Familiarity with the Hatfield Marine Science Center and experience supporting or participating in experiential, field-based learning
58. Foundational knowledge of or interest in marine and coastal science, environments, or related topics
59. Ability to remain in the position for the duration of Summer Term through Fall intersession.
60. Previous experience living and/or working in an educational residential community.
61. Preference will be given to students in an undergraduate academic program at OSU who have at least 1 year remaining in their degree pathway.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule Working Conditions/Work Schedule:
62. May work 20-40 hours per week in summer.
63. Preferred employment dates are June 8 to September 21, 2026.
64. Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, but may include some early mornings, evenings, and possibly weekends.
65. Required to work during Summer Orientation week June 15 – June 28, 2026 (Juneteenth Holiday exception).
66. Range: $15.05/Hour – $16.00/Hour
67. Furnished residence hall-style room, shared with other student workers.
68. Occasionally lifting up to 30 pounds.
69. Regular work outdoors in varying weather conditions (windy, rainy, cold, hot).
70. Walking and traversing up to several miles a day on unmaintained paths, rocks, and sand.
71. Communicating with members of the OSU community and the public.
72. Driving a university-owned 6- to 12-passenger van, sometimes on unmaintained roads and small parking lots.
