British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Sensory Scientist II in Southampton.
Key Responsibilities
* Maintain a high level of expertise in all aspects of sensory evaluation and panel maintenance across categories.
* Ensure the quality of sensory results, methodologies, and the implementation of sensory “Best Practice” across panels and sensory outcomes.
* Act as the principal contact for sensory panels and category leads, providing mentorship and consultancy to the technical community to establish and embed robust ways of working.
* Issue recommendations to collaborators based on aggregation and interpretation of sensory data and an in‑depth understanding of project objectives through close collaboration with project teams.
* Lead day‑to‑day sensory activities and manage sensory work, ensuring best‑practice implementation, aligned with the S&PCI strategy.
* Proactively seek ways to improve all aspects of sensory work, including functional methodologies, practical solutions, digital and facilities, and present these ideas to the sensory leadership team.
* Apply project‑management and digital‑data ways of working across actionable sensory insights for new categories and FMC.
* Develop and implement short‑, medium‑ and long‑term strategic plans and collaborate to achieve clear goals with key collaborators.
Qualifications
* Knowledge of sensory data collection systems (Compusense, Fizz or similar).
* Deep knowledge of sensory science and various approaches for descriptive (DQA, Spectrum), discriminative testing (DUO‑Trio, Triangle, Tetrad), temporal (TDS, DTI), ranking and CATA for product characterization, including understanding the statistics behind these tests, their application and limitations.
* Proficiency in sensory data analysis software (XLSTAT, R), including ANOVA, significance tests (Tukey, Fisher), correlation tests, PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and MFA (Multi‑Factor Analysis).
* Experience with sensory testing for claim substantiation and regulatory purposes.
* Knowledge of methods for sensory tests.
* Experience conveying sensory results in a customer‑focused manner.
* Deep knowledge on panel recruitment, training, panel validation, monitoring and improvement plans.
* Professional or academic achievement in sensory or consumer science, or a relevant scientific background with experience in a product‑related position or within the food/flavour industry.

* Experience in digital and data science (multivariate analysis, programming in R statistics).
