Role

We are looking to appoint a caring, motivated, forward-thinking and enthusiastic Senior Research Nurse to work within our Radiology Research Team. This role enables patients to participate in clinical research trials, enhances your knowledge and leadership & communication skills, and supports the conduct, delivery and collection of high-quality clinical research. You will work alongside the Research Lead Consultants, Research Sister, and Research Co-ordinator for the Radiology department and be supported by the wider clinical and research teams. Previous practical experience of working in a clinical trials/research environment is essential. You must have completed your Good Clinical Practice and Informed Consent training. You will play a key role in leading and delivering research activities, prioritise your workload, and work autonomously within your knowledge base while contributing as a key member of the team. Flexibility within office hours is required to cover the service; we will accommodate work/life needs where possible. Research experience is advantageous but not essential; all necessary training and support will be provided. The post offers a unique opportunity to work in the cutting-edge world of medicine in Radiology, including Interventional Radiology procedures.


Responsibilities

* Be a registered nurse with a degree or equivalent professional qualification
* Demonstrate effective time management and the ability to work with minimal supervision
* Integrate with multiple teams to achieve set objectives
* Be conversant with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Research Governance
* Be proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, etc.)
* Be willing to work flexibly in terms of hours and duties to meet service needs
* Be familiar with Trust CORE Values and be willing to work alongside these values
* Previous practical experience of clinical trials/research is an asset but not essential
* Mentorship qualification/ENB 998 or equivalent


Desirable criteria

* NVQ Assessor
* Recognised post-registration qualification within a speciality
* Recent clinical experience in an acute clinical environment
* Experience in mentoring/facilitation/teaching/assessing/coaching
* Recent clinical research experience
* Experience in leadership/management and specialty development
* Experience of Benchmarking; excellent interpersonal skills with ability to liaise with multidisciplinary teams
* Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise; strong team-working and motivation
* Excellent negotiating and influencing skills
* Knowledge of Research Governance Framework (RGF) and ICH/GCP
* Experience in risk assessment and computer literacy; willingness to deal with conflict and non-compliance
* Experience of involvement in successful change management

Collaboration and achievements

Collaborating with the University of Reading, we run the GENESIS trials investigating a novel treatment for knee osteoarthritis. We performed the first trial of its kind in Europe, and the third in the world. GENESIS II is the largest RCT in the world investigating this procedure. In 2018, the Research Lead, Professor Mark Little, was awarded NIHR Research Rising Star Award. In 2019 and 2024 the Radiology Research team were nominated for outstanding contribution to research at staff excellence awards. In 2021, in collaboration with Urology, we ran a world-first study investigating the use of Augmented Reality to guide prostate cancer biopsy. In 2022 Professor Little was awarded the CVIR Editors Medal, the most prestigious research award awarded by CIRSE.

We are committed to retaining and reinvesting in our staff and have used commercial research funding to support conference trips and academic training courses such as the Post Graduate Module in Planning & Managing Clinical Trials and the Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research.
